ÖgeAn Investigation On Life Center Unit's Design Criteria In Inclusive Education Environments: A Case Study On Serçev Accessible Vocational High School(Institute of Social Sciences, 2017) Gülbahar, Simge ; Cordan, Özge ; 469100 ; Interior Architectural Design (International) ; İç Mimari Tasarımı (Uluslararası)In Turkey, disabled people’s interaction with their physical environment poses many difficulties for their daily lives. For those with special needs, social integration to society should be encouraged from early ages. Increasing the level of communication and creating an inclusive environment would boost disabled people’s self-confidence and help them realize their true potential. In this context, the existence of an accessible environment is highly important for the disabled in terms of increasing their interaction with the society. Accessibility in design is an approach not only embodying spatial and environmental solutions, but also promising a fair society. In this sense, access to educational facilities brings about a problem for children with special educational needs. Disability should be discussed in different context to help promote accessibility in educational environments accommodating broad and distinctive participants. Universal design, which is cultivated by existence of many other terms bringing affluence in literature for both accessibility and usability such as design for all, inclusive design, barrier free design, transgenerational design, stands on a unique position in discussion concerning the design requirements of educational environment to promote equality. In this sense, inclusive education environment should be provided through universal design principles to provide spatial equality for individuals as much as possible. Students with special educational needs can have strong relationship with their environment thanks to the increase in the efficiency and adequacy in their educational environments with a social-rehabilitation purpose. In addition, support spaces have a significant position in inclusive education environment in terms of rehabilitating and teaching fundamental life skills to students with special educational needs. Life center unit is an enterprise in Ankara Gökkuşağı Primary Schools, having a similar purpose. For this reason, some interviews and investigations were made in Ankara Gökkuşağı Primary School, which demonstrated once again the necessity of support spaces in inclusive schools open for all –including students with special educational needs- to teach them fundamental skills. Life center unit is a place where students can gain empathy and social sensibility beyond regular education and socialize. Related to this topic, the idea of accommodating diverse physical abilities in same educational environment leads to raise the accessibility and usability concerns in inclusive education environment. Social integration, one of the purpose of inclusive education environment, is only possible with support spaces to rehabilitate the abilities of students with SEN. This foresees the need of design criteria for life center unit to define spatial requirements comprehensively. According to reviews on universal design and inclusive education, assessments are made to identify life center unit in terms of user type, type of use, period of use and spatial requirements. In this research, universal design is utilized to solve spatial problems in life center units, both technically and theoretically, to put forward a design approach for future. A design guideline is prepared for further implementation of life center unit in addition to the development of a design project for life center unit of SERÇEV Accessible Vocational High School. In this context, this thesis study, which focuses on “life center unit’s design criteria in inclusive education environment”, is comprised of six chapters: In the first chapter, definition of the problem, scope of the thesis and methodologies used in the thesis are introduced. In the second chapter, the idea of accessibility and usability are examined with references to the literature. Terms related to the idea of accessibility and usability, are introduced in order to provide further knowledge before in depth analysis of what universal design embodies. Following the definition of the terms, universal design is discussed in terms of its conceptual framework. Disability is analyzed in the context of universal design. In the third chapter, inclusive education is introduced within the concept of special educational needs with focus on both its evolution and purposes. Inclusive education environment is also explained in terms of environmental requirements. In the fourth chapter, existing life center unit in Gökkuşağı Primary School is analyzed in terms of accessibility and usability. Further expectations from life center units are introduced with the help of the interviews conducted to identify the design approaches on life center unit. In the fifth chapter, primitive design decisions on life center units are put forward with conceptual understanding of the project of life center unit in SERÇEV Accessible High School. In the sixth chapter, concurrence between universal design and inclusive education will be discussed in order to take design decisions for inclusive education environments. Conclusion and recommendation are given for further implementations of life center units in order to raise awareness on equality and non-discrimination within an inclusive education environment.

ÖgeHighly-skilled Migrants' Adaptation Process Through Participatory Urban Interior Design(Institute of Social Sciences, 2018) Kurt, Selen ; Köknar, Sait Ali ; 534597 ; Interior Architectural Design (International) ; İç Mimari Tasarım (Uluslararası)In this thesis the migration process of highly-skilled migrants is examined from a psychological viewpoint, especially with regards to factors supporting or hindering the adaptation process. The terms migrant and urban interior are linked to each other as a notion, by their temporality and mobility. A participatory urban interior design project is proposed as a measure to ease the adaptation process of highly-skilled migrants. With creating a participatory urban interior design platform, it is argued that becoming citizen is a condition that appears through spatial and expressive negotiations between the local society and the mobile people.

ÖgeWellbeing And Its Spatial Experience: Development Of Spa Design And Contemporary Spa Spaces(Institute of Social Sciences, 2018) Kahraman, Nazım ; Görgül, Emine ; 512588 ; Interior Architectural Design (International) ; İç Mimari Tasarım (Uluslararası)Wellbeing as a notion gains importance day by day hand in hand with the status of healthiness. World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" on the one hand; on the other hand, Global Wellness Institution (GWI, 2017) stresses wellness as intellectual, religious and medical movements and modern concept with ancient roots beginning with the Ayurveda treatments followed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ancient Greek doctrines, Roman Medicine and movements in United States and Europe in 19th century. Today, wellbeing and being healthy are the ultimate goals that are difficult to endure due to increasing stress level in modern world, working environment with high-intensity and expectations from civilized human. As a result of these, people need to have treatments and experiences to relax and stay strong. In this content, spa spaces compel attention. As the word spa literally refers to the abbreviation of sanus (salus/ sanitas) per aquam that means health coming from water in Latin. The relation between human beings and water starts in the mother womb and continues in many forms. People are always attracted to water and this interest originates from different aspects like need for bathing, religious and spiritual rituals and the belief to curative powers of water. Bathing can take place where water exist as bathtub, shower or even river, sea, ocean, lake. While human baths throughout the history, the forms of bathing shaped according to different reigns, beliefs and politics.

ÖgeCinematographic Narrative In Interior Design Pedagogies(Institute of Social Sciences, 2019) Girgin, Fatma Ekin ; Görgül, Emine ; 615528 ; Interior Architectural Design(International) ; İç Mimari Tasarım(Uluslararası)This thesis study, which projects the reflections of an experimental, interdisciplinary and multi-faceted attempt on design education, aims to connect diverse but intertwined disciplines of ―cinematography‖ with ―design pedagogies‖ by establishing the connections between these fields within alike perspectives. The undeniable power and decisiveness of cinema, cinematography and visual narrative on generating ―atmospheres‖ is the main and primary motive for this praxis, on behalf of building a novel pedagogical model for interior design pedagogies on perceiving, interpreting and generating the spatial atmosphere. The fact that ―cinematic comprehension and cinematic notion possesses a substantial role in expanding the perspective of the individual on experience, perception, and interpretation‖, on the other hand ―it possesses the competence of being a powerful atmospheric production and representation medium‖ is crucial for this study. In this respect, while investigating the genuine methods and techniques of cinematographic narrative in a deeper sense, they are sought to integrate into the design processes as a tool for narrative and atmosphere generation in further. In other words, cinematic notions, tools, and methods are deployed as novel and alternative methodologies for design processes, especially for interior design studio pedagogies. Based on all these justifications above, first of all, in the first chapter of the thesis manuscript, the research inquiry, the frame of the discussion, the topic, aim, scope and method of the study are emphasized as a brief introduction and preliminary statement of the thesis.

ÖgePublic Interiority Through Urban Moblity: Design Approaches For Railway Stations In İstanbul(Institute of Social Sciences, 2019) Akdemir, Gizem ; Görgül, Emine ; 570649 ; Interior Architectural Design (International) ; İç Mimari Tasarım (Uluslararası)The starting point of the study is the importance of interior architectural design discipline as a force that can positively affect the urban wellbeing in metropolitan cities. The notion of publicness or being public and the public spaces that have an essential and inevitable part in the daily urban life, defines the potentials that interior architectural design in terms of enhancing the urban wellbeing. In this context, the concept of urban interior and urban interior practices which also includes the characteristics of public and interior spaces, are considered an efficient tool for improving the urban environment. In this thesis, it is suggested that transportation nodes, which are accepted as the intersections of everyday urban life, as well as urban mobilities and public life, are also urban and public interiors. Based on the hypothesis that transportation nodes accepted as urban and public interiors, public transport structures have been specified due to their direct relation with the concept of urban wellbeing. On this purpose, railway stations which are parts of urban setting from the initial phase of the transformation process of metropolitan cities are selected as the main areas of the study. The aim of the study is to compare the existing conditions of urban and public interiors among selected transportation nodes and then discuss design approaches to improve them. The study offers a relatively experimental approach on evaluating the quality of urban and public interiors. Also, it is intended that the developed method would be beneficial for further studies about urban and interior spaces.

ÖgeEnvironmental Perception And "affect" Interaction Within Public Interiors: İstanbul Courthouses(Institute of Social Sciences, 2019) Ayhan, Özgün ; Görgül, Emine ; 569541 ; Interior Architectural Design (International) ; İç Mimari Tasarım (Uluslararası)Public interiors are important structural areas for space-individual interaction studies. This study aimed to investigate the public interior-individual interaction through the affects of the public interior on individuals or in other words, the emotional reactions of individuals to the public interiors. The focus has been made on the recent judicial structures built in Istanbul throughout the scope of the study. These new courthouses were built in order to play a central role by combining with previously constructed and used buildings, which are now all under one roof. This radical change seen in the courthouse buildings is thought to differ the affects that influence the perception of space. In this research, the role of the public interior in interaction with the individual, and how it works as an interface are examined through the phenomenon of affect. The main purpose of this study is to read the public interior-individual interaction simultaneously and to determine the existence of an interaction between design and affect. Moreover, if there is an interaction between them, it is examined furthermore to see how different design decisions trigger what kind of affects. Ultimately, the accuracy of these hypotheses has been evaluated through the field research.

ÖgeSpatial analysis of musical diaspora culture(Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2020-07-16) Uluksar, Deniz ; Garip, Ervin ; 635856 ; İç Mimarlık Anabilim DalıDespite being majorly considered a means for pleasure and entertainment, music has always been a subconscious tool for nations to maintain their culture and transfer it to future generations. People from all around the world used their own genuine music, sometimes even just notes, to articulate their pride in their national history or the sorrows they went through as community. During adaptation, people who are forced to leave their homelands for any reason tend to keep their own culture and resist the social integration in their hostland, where they are considered the minority and even face social exclusion. Throughout history, migrants faced exclusion and opression as minorities, but they found ways to adapt their own music to their new homeland and continue their culture, which also served as a safe spot from the oppresion. This is how the migrants in diaspora are able to save their cultural identities as minorities. This dissertation discusses how the diaspora culture blends in with new geographies through evolving into the music and lifestyle more relatable by the majority of their hostland, and how it translates into various spaces through the very means. Most prominent examples of the diaspora culture are the African people brought to the USA for slave trade, the Rums of Turkey who faced forced migration during the Turkish-Greek population exchange, and for a broader concept, the scattering of Jews across the world, and the Romanians, implementing their own culture into their host countries instead of integration because they were generally not accepted by some nations.
