dc.description.abstract Today, with the rapid increase in the need for superstructure and popularity of the multi-storey high-rise buildings, composite materials are used to improve weak soils. The use of environmental and industrial waste materials as raw material in composite soils helps protect environment with the recycling of these materials while providing more economic solutions. One of the formations in which the waste materials can be used as a component is controlled low strength material (CLSM). Controlled low strength material is a self-compacting cementious material that is generally used as back-fill as an alternative to compacted-fill. Controlled low strength material is identified as materials that have a compressive strength under 8.3 MPa. In most of the current CLSM applications, unconfined compression strength is under 2.1 MPa. A low strength criterion is required for the material as there can be an excavation in future. With the high workability and easy deliverance, CLSM offers strong and durable performance for filling applications in geotechnical engineering with its versatile nature. It requires less inspection compared to traditional soil fills and reduces the equipment needs. Selection of materials that will be used in CLSM mixtures should be based on availability, cost, specific application, and the necessary characteristics of the mixture, including flow ability, strength, easiness of excavation and density. Nonstandard materials can be used to produce CLSM as long as the materials have been tested and found to satisfy the intended application. In all developed and developing countries, solid waste is a social, economic and environmental issue. A portion of this waste constitutes of recyclable wastes, and with several processes, they may be used again. In Turkey, waste glass makes the significant part of solid wastes. One of the recycled glass product is glass foam. The basic principle of glass foam manufacture is to generate a gas in glass at a temperature between 700 and 900°C. The gas expands thus producing a structure of cells to form a porous body. Final production cellular glass has a high strength and dimensional stability with low density. Glass foam is generally used as thermal and acoustical isolation material. The cellular and lightweight structure of this material makes it a potential fill material for geotechnical applications where the lightness is important. Lightweight fill materials can be used in geotechnical engineering for the consolidation and bearing capacity problems of very soft soils, for filling applications performed on potentially collapsible slopes generally. The use of lightweight fill materials can be summarized as below: -Decreasing the pressures on the retaining structures, -Constructing fills with low need of maintenance, -Preventing construction deformations over nearby buildings, -Reducing consolidation of sub base construction over weak soils, -Preventing consolidation difference between fills and reducing lateral earth pressure over piles, -Reducing consolidation of manmade islands and high quality seawalls, -Lowering process time of constructions over weak soils, -Lowering topographical changes in mountain road constructions, -Stabilizing slopes over mountain road constructions. Various lightweight aggregates like pumice stone, forest products sourced industrial wastes like tree shells and sawdust, used tire pieces, polystyrene foam and fly ash are the regular lightweight fill material. With regards of recycling of the industrial and environmental waste and reducing the storage problems, the use of these materials in civil engineering industry, especially in the geotechnical applications as raw materials, contributes to the economy and the environment. In this study, the availability of glass foam as a component for CLSM production was investigated, some geotechnical properties including strength and unit weight characteristics of glass foam used-composite soils were explored using several laboratory tests. Glass foam was used with cement to make it more durable against friction. In terms of allowable bearing pressure, 0.3 to 0.7 MPa strength is aimed as it is equivalent to a well-compacted fill. 7-day compressive strength of the designed composite soil fill was aimed to be over 0.7 MPa. On the other hand, for the possibility of an excavation in the composite soil, the upper strength limit was chosen as around 1.0 MPa. From the studies found in literature, the unit weight of the mixture was deemed appropriate around 9.81 kN/m3. The effect of glass foam granulometry on unit weight and unconfined compression strength was researched. Also research was done with mixture of sand and foam. Experimental work was carried out in three main stages. In the first stage, the effect of foam granulometry on unit weight and unconfined strength of the composites were investigated. It has been observed that the mixtures produced from coarse glass foam were lighter compared to the finer ones. In the second stage, certain amounts of sand were added to cement-glass foam mixtures and the effect of sand on unit weight and unconfined compression strength of the composites were determined. A certain mixture design and some engineering properties of this lightweight composite fill were determined by unconfined compression, permeability and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests. To determine the proper mixture proportion, trial mixtures was produced and the unit weights of these trials were examined. Designs in that the cement dosage and volumetric calculations were used similar to conventional concrete mix design have not been successful due to the crushing of foam particles during production. Cement that was used as binder and glass foam material to obtain a cellular structure were mixed in various weight proportions and lightweight specimens were produced. In the mixtures that were produced with different sand ratios, the water amount was determined according to the mixtures that consist of only glass foam and was kept constant. The reason for that is to prevent the effect of water/cement ratio on the test results. The reason for taking into account the mixtures those consist of only glass foam for water amount is that the most water requirement was observed by these mixtures. When the sand ratios were increased in mixtures, the water amount has increased due to the high relative unit weight of the sand compared to glass foam and caused segregation problems. This must be considered in the cases that high sand ratios are used and water content must be adjusted. In consequences of these experiences, the mix design that will be used in later stage of the study was modified. When the 7-day experimental results of the mixtures that were produced using different sand ratios was examined, it has been observed that the optimum results were exhibited by the specimens which has equal sand and glass foam quantity and cement over foamed sand mixture ratio is two. To solve the segregation problem which caused by excess water content, the water/cement ratio was decreased from 0.70 to 0.45 and with this modification, the strength of the mixture was increased and the target design was achieved. The results of the tests performed on the final mixtures can be summarized as below: -The average value of the saturated unit weight of the mixture after modifications done was found as 8.83 kN/m3. -The average value of the typical 7-day unconfined compression strength of the mixture was determined as 0.75 MPa while the average of the 28-day unconfined compressive strength was 0.91 MPa. -The average value of the modulus of elasticity of the 7-day-specimens was determined as 131.2 MPa while it was 205.2 MPa for 28-day-specimens. -The shear modulus of the mixture was determined as 50.4 MPa and 79.0 MPa for 7-day and 28-day specimens respectively. -The CBR value of the 7-day mixtures was observed as 38.4 while this value was 78.9 for 28-day mixtures. CBR tests showed that the glass foam-sand-cement mixtures have enough bearing capacity to be used as a subbase material. -The permeability coefficient of the mixtures was found as 7.28x10-3cm/s for 7-day specimens and 7.05x10-3cm/s for 28-day specimens. These values showed that specimens have an intermediate permeability level. As a result, by producing lightweight fills with CLSM mixture produced using glass foam-sand-cement can be a solution for consolidation and bearing capacity problems of very soft soils which continually consolidate, constitution of geotechnical fills on potentially sliding slopes and reducing the stress distribution on retaining structures. Subsequent to the setting, with the immediate progression in cohesion of the lightweight mixture, lateral stresses can be reduced in the applications. In consequence of the high drainage ability arising from the cellular structure of foam glass, CLSM mixtures produced using glass foam are a convenient material for pavement and highway structures exposed to regular rain and snow waters. With this superior drainage performance, it has precedence over other fill materials. en_US
