It is known that plastics wich are not containing antioxidants, especially high density polyethylene (HDPE), cannot start to degrade less than 150 hours under UV irradation. By adding UV sensitive mayerials at room temperature beginning of the degradatıon period can be taken down to less than 100 hours. The aim of this work is the investigation of degradation of HDPE by using UV irradation and effect of heat with a photosensitive reactive additive such as acetophenone-formaldehyde resin (AFR). For this purpose, first of all the UV sensitive AFR is synthesized and and mixed with plastic powder physically, then this mixture is heated at various constant temparatures (30oC,40oC, 65oC, 90oC) under the UV irradiation. The samples are taken at various time to investigate the degradation by FTIR spectrophotometric and viscometric method. Base-line method is applied to FTIR spectra data to calculate carbonyl indices(CI). The spectroscopic and viscometric data are plotted to obtain CI-time, M? -time, M?-CI figures. The result of this work show that, the heat effects strongly to the degradation processes of HDPE with the presence of AFR.
