The fundamental geodetic network studies in Turkey have been initiated in 1932 and establisment of First-Order Horizontal Control Network was accomplished in early 1950’s and adjusted in 1954. Thus Turkish National Datum-1954 (TND-54) was defined and afterwards this datum was transformed into ED-50. Due to the regional distortions in Turkey, ED-50 became unable to meet the practical demands. A need for a new national geodetic network emerged and it was considered to be based on GPS technology. Therefore the new fundamental geodetic network was established through the measurements and processing studies between the years 1997 and 1999 and called Turkish National Fundamental GPS Network 1999 (TFGN99A). In Turkey, currently two different datums are in use and it became inevitable to determine the transformation between these datums (ED-50 and TFGN99A). The transformation between these datums was determined utilizing two different methods and 220 points, the coordinates of which are known in both datums. In the first method the transformation was determined by the “similarity transformation of seven parameters”. In the second method, the transformation was made by obtaining the latitude and longitude difference seperately at 3’ x 3’ grid corners and by predicting these differences at any desired point to be transformed. Also, these two methods were applied to the five regions seperately which were determined according to tectonic plate borders in the country.
