A Poster is a printed paper illustrated in order announce any news or newly introduced products, and olso a division of graphic arts. The Turkish word of poster ("Afiş") stems from the French word "Af fice". Abstract works of art are works that do not copy reality as in traditional art, that deny figurative views, that are born out of the artist's own imagination and that are as close possible to the said imagination The study comprises abstract and stylised symbols. The text, beginning with the chapter entidled Graphic Arts, constitutes of the chapters with the following subheadings: The History of Graphics, Examples from Foreign, Graphic Designer, Poster Design, Development of Poster Art in Turkey. Graphic Arts comprise works of arts which depend upon illustration and which supply a utilazable view or symbol of objects to be either reproduced or manufactured. Under all heading, general poster art examples from both Turkey and throughout the world are provided. Each of the said examples can be found in its own period. I believe that the said examples support my own works. The purpose of the chapter entidled "Works of Art" is to visualize five plays produced by the State Opera and Ballet Organization through posters. PLAYS: o Swan Lake o The King and I o Don Quixote o Salome o Carmen While composing, the order, harmony, balance and rhythm urom within the play are considered, Therer exists a unity in all these. Colour and text which are the vital points of any poster bring out the composition. Subject is very important while designing a poster. However, the subject is not sufficient in itself in determining the form. While the subject gains importance with the meaning attached by the artist, the works of art begin to form. The colour, fonts and stains used in a poster emphasize the space. Upon this, fonts and other stains in compliance with the concent of the play give depth to the space. For instance, the degraded blue background used in the poster for the "Swan Lake" is meanwhile representing the lake. The blackground of the poster for "Salome" represents the dungeon. The fonts upon the posters are related to the concent f the play and render motion to the space. The effect of light reveals the density changing in accordans with the distance between objects connections. The colour technique has changed continiously from antiquity on. Like other elements, the colours in posters are chosen in accordiance with the concent of related play. The colour has an important efeect upon space. The reason why the plays produced by the State Opera and Ballet Organization are selected is that the said play are also works of art themselves. The posters could readily be advertisings for a product design or a company. The harmony of the plays influenced the formation of the said works. The harmony of each play within itself, aesthetics, scenes and decors, characters and music are all important factors affecting the formation of the posters. While the concent of the works are determined, the colour, fonts, abstract stains are given primary consideration. The said elements are all connected to the play itself. Content of the Compasitions in posters: - Each of tha fonts separately represents the concent of the related play. The fonts in the "swan Lake" are selected from among fonts with a soft character while more particular and dynamic characters are preferred in "Carmen" in order to underline the soft and emotional rhythm of the play. In "Salome" a font symbolising blood and death is to relate the tragedy. - Colours in the backgrounds are selected from among colours constrating with the fonts. - Other abstract stains (swan, silhouette of a woman, leaves, Siamese alphabet) are related to the concent of the play. Contemporary art is trying to save us from individuality. While old art attached VI importance to individual and spatial values, contemporary art is attempting to address to each and every one of us. For this reason, we are forced to keep pac with the technological developments of our age. I also made use of tha said developments while preparing my thesis and designed the posters on computer. Before designing the posters, I frequented more than 10 plays in the Atatürk Cultural Center during two years. I even saw some one of them twice. At the end of each play, I formed the foundatinon of my thesis by keeping notes about the ffect of the play upon me and by drawing some related sketches. Then, all I had to do was to enter the same into the computer. After preparing the poster on the computer and colouring them, I printed A4 size sketches. I had the chance to try different colours on the screen and produce some variations. After conducting the last corrections upon the most suitable of the following software: Freehand 7.0, Adobe Photoshop 4.0 for designing and QuarkXPress for Page-setting.
