Abstract

Taking into consideration that its comprehensive restoration was in the 1970’s, it is a reality that Pantepoptes Monastery Church (Eski Imaret Camii) touching the Istanbul silhouette for over 9 years, hasn’t received the care it deserves. It was built as a temple/church of a monastery on the hills of Halic during the Byzantium Empire and an addition was built in the Palaiologos period. The alteration of function that the monastery buildings have gone through after the conquest of Istanbul has been in effect for the temple building and the church has been turned into to a mosque. After the Fatih Kulliyesi was built, the spaces used temporarily in the monastery were moved to the kulliye and the temple building was used with the function of a mosque. In time, the building was neglected as it was affected by fires in the region. It is evident from the old photographs that the roof of the building went through a poor and unoriginal restoration at the beginning of last century and the minaret demolished in time. The roof which also resulted in the south arches being cut, was removed in the restoration in the 1970’s and thus making it possible to turn the building to its relatively original condition.
