In this thesis, rhodium(II) acetate dimer catalyzed reactions of an ?,ß-acetylenic compound, 2-octynal, with four different diazo compounds were studied. From the catalytic reaction of 2-octynal and 1-diazo-1-phenylpropan-2one, a donor-acceptor diazo compound, epoxide product was obtained as a major product along with a small amount of dioxolane derivative as a mixture of isomers. While epoxide derivative was obtained via [1,3]-electrocyclization reaction; formal [3+2] addition of an additional aldehyde to carbonyl ylide resulted dioxolane isomers. When donor-acceptor diazo compound (E)-methyl 2-diazo-4-phenylbut-3-enoate was used instead, dihydrofuran compound was observed as the major product along with an epoxide derivative. Because of the presence of a vinyl group, carbene intermediate reacted as a 1,3-dipole and realized a formal [3+2] addition reaction to produce a dihydrofuran derivative. In the case of an acceptor-acceptor diazocarbonyl compound, dimethyl diazomalonate, the sole product was a dioxolane derivative. The plausible mechanism for the formation of dioxolane compound may involve epoxy derivative although epoxy derivative itself could not be observed under our conditions. When an acceptor diazo compound, ethyl diazoacetate was chosen, being contrary to our precedent attempts, furan products (ethyl 4-pentylfuran-3-carboxylate and ethyl 3-pentylfuran-2-carboxylate) were obtained. The plausible mechanism for the formation of these furan derivatives involves [1,5]-electrocyclic ring closure reaction of carbonyl ylide followed by intramolecular rearrangements of either ethoxy-carbonyl or hydrogen. We also observed dioxolane compound as isomer mixture.
