dc.description.abstract | Urban quality is a combination of aesthetic value, social interaction, environmental sustainability, service quality, and concepts that positively influence the urban experience. Emerging cities are adopting innovative approaches to increase sustainability and improve the well-being of their residents. One of the newest technologies, artificial intelligence-based systems, can be a critical tool for enhancing the quality of life in urban development learning capability. Research questions for this study are: where are new technologies being used by cities to enhance quality of life, and what are the potential implications for citizens of integrating artificial intelligence applications into urban environments? The thesis employs a research methodology consisting of multiple case studies and comparative case analysis. First, a detailed literature survey of existing studies on artificial intelligence systems and urban livability criteria is conducted and the application areas of artificial intelligence systems are examined under 4 main urban quality criteria: accessibility, urban aesthetics, safety, and sustainability. In the context of multiple case studies, two port cities in different countries, Hamburg and İzmir, are analyzed and a comparative assessment is presented in terms of smart system-based projects developed to enhance urban quality. The thesis discusses the pros and cons of both cities' approaches to urban design and the potential of integrating artificial intelligence technologies to enhance urban livability. Finally, following the findings, the outcomes of this research provide a promising perspective by offering different perspectives about how AI could be used in cities to improve well-being. | |
