The development and transformation of the İslamic publishing field: The cases of Nesil and Timaş

Abstract

Using Pierre Bourdieu?s ?field theory? as its conceptual framework, this thesis investigates the development and transformation of the Islamic publishing field in Turkey. Presenting a broad historical overview of the relations between Islamic movements and the state in Turkey from the late Ottoman era to the present, the thesis discusses the emergence of the Islamic cultural field in general, and the Islamic field of publishing in particular in relation to the transformation of the political, cultural and economic fields in Turkey. Focusing specifically on the two prominent Islamic publishing houses emerged from the Nur community, Nesil and Timaş, the thesis demonstrates how the Islamic field of publishing has moved from the periphery to the center of the broader cultural field in Turkey. The thesis examines the transformation of the publishing policies of Nesil and Timaş from the 1960s to the present. At the same time, on the basis of the interviews and the field study, the thesis provides an analytical and critical evaluation of persistent discursive elements and institutional practices characterizing the current identity of these Islamic publishing houses.

Pierre Bourdieu'nün ?alan teorisini? kavramsal çerçeve olarak kullanarak, bu tez Türkiye'de İslami yayıncılık alanının gelişimini ve dönüşümünü incelemektedir. Geç Osmanlı döneminden günümüze Türkiye'de İslami hareketler ve devlet arasındaki ilişkilerin geniş bir tarihsel perspektifini sunarak, tez, genel olarak İslami kültürel alanın, özel olarak ise İslami yayıncılık alanının Türkiye'deki siyasal, kültürel ve ekonomik alanlardaki dönüşümler bağlamında ortaya çıkışını tartışmaktadır. Nur cemaatinden ortaya çıkan iki önde gelen İslami yayın evi olan Nesil ve Timaş'a özel olarak odaklanarak, tez, İslami yayıncılık alanının nasıl Türkiye'nin genel kültürel alanının çevresinden merkezine hareket ettiğini göstermektedir. Tez, Nesil ve Timaş'ın yayıncılık politikalarının 1960'lardan günümüze gelişimini incelemektedir. Aynı zamanda, mülakatlar ve alan araştırması çerçevesinde, bu yayın evlerinin günümüzdeki kimliğini karakterize eden söylemsel unsurların ve kurumsal pratiklerin analitik ve eleştirel bir değerlendirmesini ortaya koymaktadır.
