19. yüzyıl İstanbul mimarlık ortamında Rum Ortodoks kiliselerinin yapım ve onarım süreçleri

Abstract

18. yüzyılda batı ile etkileşimi artan Osmanlı Devleti 19. yüzyıl ile birlikte idari, sosyo-kültürel ve ekonomik alanda birçok değişim yaşamıştır. Yaşanan bu değişimler kentsel düzene ve mimariye de etki etmiş, kent içinde yeni yapı tipleri ve yeni mimari üsluplar görülmeye başlanmıştır. Bu çalışma ile söz konusu değişimlerin Rum Ortodoks kiliselerinin yapım ve onarım süreçlerine nasıl etki ettiği ele alınmıştır. Özellikle Tanzimat ve Islahat fermanları ile eşitlik olgusunun vurgulanması ve gayrimüslim kesimin yeni haklar elde etmesi, kilise mimarisi için de yeniliklere sebep olmuştur. İstanbul kent merkezinde bulunan tüm Rum Ortodoks kiliselerinin ön çalışma olarak izlenmesi ve onlara dair envanter fişleri oluşturulması ile başlanan bu tezin ana kaynaklarını da Osmanlı arşiv belgeleri oluşturmaktadır. Osmanlı Arşivi dışında, kilise vakıflarına ait arşivlerde ve bazı özel arşivlerde yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda elde edilen belgelerin gün ışığına çıkarılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu belgeler ile seçilen Rum Ortodoks kiliselerinin onarım ve yapım süreçlerindeki, idari işleyiş ve mimari teknik bilgiler incelenmiştir. Onarımlarda kullanılan yapı malzemeleri, çalışan meslek grupları, yapım teknikleri, kullanılan ölçü birimleri, görev alan kurum ve kuruluşlar gibi bilgiler arşiv belgelerinden öğrenilmektedir. Bu belgeler aracılığı ile geçmiş dönem restorasyon uygulamaları ile ilgili bilgi edinmek gelecekteki müdahaleler için yol gösterici niteliktedir. Çalışma sırasında İstanbul'da bulunan 96 adet Rum Ortodoks kilisesi için ön araştırma ve inceleme yapılmıştır. Tüm bu kiliseler için Osmanlı Arşivi'nde bulunan belgeler tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Kiliselerin tarihî ve mimari özelliklerine, eski fotoğraf ve haritalardaki varlıklarına ve haklarında yapılan detaylı çalışmalara yer verilen envanter fişleri hazırlanmıştır. Arşiv belgelerinin niteliğine göre şekillenen bu tezde Galatasaray Panayia Kilisesi'nin genişletilmesi, Şişli Metamorfosis Kilisesi'nin yapımı, Kumkapı Panayia (Elpida) Kilisesi'nin ve Gedikpaşa Ayia Kiryaki Kilisesi'nin yeniden yapım süreçleri detaylı olarak ele alınmıştır. Örnek incelemelerinden önce 19. yüzyılda İstanbul'da mimarlık ve kültür ortamının nasıl olduğu; kent dokusunda, toplumsal ve kültürel alanda yaşanan değişim ve dönüşümler, İstanbul'daki gayrimüslimler ve mimarlık etkinlikleri, gayrimüslimler içinde Rumların yeri alt başlıkları ile ele alınmıştır. 19. yüzyıl İstanbul'unda yapım ve onarım faaliyetleri ise; anıtsal yapıların yapım ve onarım süreçleri, idari yapılanma, yasal süreçte yaşanan değişimler, Rum Ortodoks kiliselerinin yapım ve onarım süreçleri alt başlıkları ile aktarılmıştır.

The Westernization in the Ottoman Empire, which started with the so-called Tulip Era, was a long process, and resulted in many changes and developments in different fields. These developments had a particular impact on architecture, urbanism and social life in Istanbul. The new typology, architectural style started to be noticed. This study aims to reveal changes affected the construction and restoration processes of the Greek Orthodox churches. Especially the 19th century witnessed radical transformations and reforms in the economic, political and social arenas in the Ottoman Empire. Another specific aspect of the 19th century was the influence of the Tanzimat and Islahat Edicts in the non-Muslim's lifestyle. The changes and reforms within these edicts were reflected in the architectural activity of the churches with also respect to the political developments. The main sources of this thesis, which started with the research of all Greek Orthodox churches in the city center of Istanbul as a preliminary study and creating inventory for them, are the Ottoman archival documents. Besides the Ottoman Archives, the documents in the archives belonging to the Greek Orthodox churches foundation and some private archives were also used and evaluated. The administrative operation and architectural technical information of restoration and construction process of Greek Orthodox churches were studied. Information on construction materials, class of labor, construction technique, units of measurement, relevant institutions and organizations were obtained from archival documents. The archival documents are the most important proofs that help us to understand the past restoration implementations and shed light on future restoration processes with its technical details such as construction material lists and technical drawings. In this study, 96 Greek Orthodox churches in Istanbul were studied. The documents in the Ottoman Archives were identified for all these churches. The inventory was prepared about the history and architectural characteristics of churches, existence in the old photos and maps and detailed research. In this thesis, which is shaped by the content of the archival documents, the extension of Galatasaray Panayia Church, the construction of Şişli Metamorphosis Church, the reconstruction of Kumkapı Panayia (Elpida) Church and Gedikpaşa Ayia Kiryaki Church were presented in detail. Before the case studies, the architectural and cultural milieu in Istanbul in the 19th century, the changes and transformations in the urban fabric, changes and transformations in the social sphere, non-Muslims and their architectural activities in Istanbul, the situation of Greeks among non-Muslims were studied as sub-headings.
