16. Yüzyılda Batılı Gezginlerin İngilizce Ve Türkçe Yayımlanan Notlarında İstanbul Ve Anıtları

Abstract

Kurulduğu andan itibaren hızla büyümekte olan Osmanlı Devleti, onaltıncı yüzyılda ilerlemesinin en üst noktasına varmıştı. Rönesans'dan sonra ortaya çıkan pekçok buluş ve keşif, Avrupa'ya yeni bir yol açmıştı. Deniz yolculukları artık çok daha rahat yapılabiliyordu. Böylelikle yeni kıtalar keşfedildi. Ticaret için yeni pazarlara ulaşıldı. Yeni yerler hakkında birçok kitap yazılmaya başlandı. Bu kitaplar, insanları, daha önce gitmedikleri yerlere gitmeye yönelttiler. Bu yüzyılda Avrupa devletleri, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun desteğini sağlamaya çalışıyorlardı. Bu güç, aynı zamanda yabancı devletlerin çok ilgisini çekiyordu. Hepsi, Osmanlıların gücünün arkasındaki nedenleri çok merak ediyorlardı. Aynı zamanda, Rönesans'dan sonra antikiteye karşı artan ilginin devamı olarak, özellikle İstanbul, sahip olduğu düşünülen antik ve Osmanlı eserleri nedeniyle de merak konusuydu çünkü Osmanlılar da gizemli "Doğu"nun bir parçasıydılar. Sosyal hayatları, adetleri, ilişkileri, kısacası yaşamları her yönüyle yabancıların ilgisini çekiyordu. İstanbul ise, Osmanlı'ların yeni başkenti olarak, kozmopolit bir yaşayışa olanak sağlıyordu. Bu şehirde pekçok milletten insan yaşamaktaydı. Bu durum, kent içindeki yaşayışta da kendini belli ediyordu. Bütün bunları incelemek için çeşitli görevlerde kişiler İstanbul'a geldiler. Bunların arasında tüccarları, misyonerleri, bilim adamlarını, sanatçıları sayabiliriz. Gelen kişilerin İstanbul hakkındaki gözlemleri çoğu zaman bir kitaba dönüşüyordu. Bunun sayesinde gezi günlükleriyle ilgili büyük bir arşiv meydana geldi. Yabancı gezginler, İstanbul ve buradaki yaşam hakkında detaylı bilgiler veriyorlardı. Bu kişilerin Osmanlı İmparatorluğu konusunda yazdıkları notlar, birçok konu hakkında birinci el kaynak olarak kabul edilebilir. Yabancı gezginlerin anlattığı pekçok eser bugün yoktur. Bu nedenle, seyahatnamelerden elde edilen bilgiler, bugün bilmemizin mümkün olmadığı birçok konu hakkında bize ışık tutar.

From its beginning on, the Ottoman Empire was developing fastly and the Empire had reached its peak point in the sixteenth century. After the Renaissance, there were a lot of new discoveries and inventions. These new discoveries and inventions had open a new way for Europe. Europeans was using sea road easily thus new continents were discovered and new markets were reached. Furthermore, a lot of books were written about the unknown places recently. This situation, pushed a lot of people to see these places. In this century, European nations were trying to have the support of the Ottoman Empire because the Empire was very powerful. These nations were also interested in this power. All of these nations were interested in the reasons behind this power. By the way, after the Renaissance an interest had begun in Europe according to the antiquity, especially Istanbul was being thought that it has a lot of antique ruins. At least the foreigners were thinking so. Ottomans was also a part of the East. Briefly, the West was interested in the social life, customs, relationships, art, army and etc. of the Ottoman Empire. Meanwhile, Istanbul, as a capital city of the Ottoman Empire, has a very cosmopolite life because there were a lot of different people from different nations and religions in Istanbul. A lot of people from different occupations came to Istanbul to search for these peculiarities of Ottomans; merchantalists, missionaires, scientists, artists and etc. These people were writing books about what they saw and live in Istanbul. Thus, an archive was created by these travel diaries. These foreign travellers were giving a lot of informations about Istanbul and life in here. The diaries and notes that were written by these travellers can be accepted as a primary source about Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century. A lot of historical monuments were not surviving anymore. Because of this reason, the informations which were learned from the traveller's diaries enlighten us about a lot of unknown monuments and subjects in the sixteent century.
