dc.description.abstract All of foregoing environmental problems are actually results of urban development. And project in progress and in the planning stages are expected to add even more to the current environmental problems due to urbanization on if necessary measures are not taken. Therefare it is necessary to make decisions on site selection, upgrading of currently existing facilities, and for prevention of environmental problems in accordance with population projections within the framework of sound urban development. Plans should not take account of economic considerations only but they should also care for environmental issues. It is obvious that if the development in the region is not properly revised for an environmentally sound urbanization strategy not only current environmental problems will increase but also new problems will appear turning the region into the area of unacceptable quality. xvui facilities, izmit Bay Region is typical example of studies pertaining to pollution abatement and upgrading of water quality in polluted estuaries and bays due to unsound urbanization and industrialization in Turkey. Similar to other bay region in Turkey, an ever increasing density in industrial activities is observed around Izmit Bay. It is obvious that the rapid population increase and unsound urbanization practice has led to various environmental problems in the İzmit Bay Area. Industry and settlements contribute a lot to environmental problems. Taken all together the trend legal and illegal settlements described above brings together with a number or environmental problems including insufficiencies in the infrastructure, loss of productive agriculture land, physical and aesthetic deterioration of the natural environment. Some environmental problems in the region are as follows: Industrial waste water have a significant impact on water quality. A great majority of domestic wastewater from various settlements are not handled properly. Sewerage facilities are very limited. Because the sewerage system is incomple. Air pollution seems to be a very significant environmental problem in the region. The main sources of air pollution in Izmit Bay Region can be classified as; air pollution caused by heating, air pollution caused by stack gases of industrial plants especially cement and chemical industries, air polution caused by exhaust gases of vehicles. Pollution of ships is an important environmental problems that see in the region. Because, some ships that come to docks for loading or unloading discharge their ballast, bilge, domestic waste waters and solid wastes into the sea illegally. xvu All of foregoing environmental problems are actually results of urban development.
