Both the academicians and the manufacturing industries focus on Cellular Manufacturing (CM) with a growing interest. The field analyses have been performed to determine the situation of Turkish industrial firms on CM implementations, to compare it with the other implementations throughout the world and to assist both the academicians and the industrial practitioners in converting their production systems to CM. 16 manufacturing firms which are the leaders in their sectors in Turkey and which have international qualifications and totally 163 manufacturing cells in these firms have been studied in the field analysis. The study has been realized by means of filling the investigation questionnaire that has been prepared beforehand based on negotiations and observations on the shop floor. First stage of the study contains the collection and interpretation of the information related to the period before the CM project and its organization, CM design process and CM implementation results. To develop a conversion methodology to CM, initially the academic studies were examined and the current methodologies were evaluated. With taking the advantage of the strong aspects of the current methodologies and the deficiencies of the implementations in the Turkish industry, a proposed methodology is developed and the stages of the methodology are explained. The social and the technical aspects of the CM conversion are taken into consideration in this methodology.
