The order of a master element in the finite element analysis is crucially important when an increased accuracy is needed for stress-strain analyses, although the computation period becomes longer. Using the master elements starting with Lagrange elements and ending with serendipity ones, many researchers tried to improve the accuracy level in the obtained results. These results are very important for the stress concentration zones in solid mechanics problems. In the finite element analyses, the rectangular shaped serendipity elements are often used. The procedure to obtain the serendipity element requires coordinate transformation. For this purpose, a mapping between a finite master element and a real physical element is done. The real locations of edge nodes on the physical element are important and they affect the mapping process. In the conventional analyses, these edge locations are mapped to predefined fix locations on the finite master elements. If the edge node coordinates of the real element are somehow mispositioned, a distortion occurs in the calculations that causes the polynomial functions in the finite master element to be mapped into nonlinear polynomial functions in the global space. To get rid of the mapping distortions, an adjustable finite master element was improved in the previous studies. In these researches a modification of the 8-node serendipity element was used. Later, an improved study to fix the accuracy of finite element results was carried out for enriching the finite master elements with addition of interior nodes. Due to efficieny and accuracy needs in some structural engineering problems, the edge node points are needed to be located not on the midpoints of the finite master element. The improved serendipity elements are capable of allowing the use of different power of finite elements without using a constraint at the transition and have capacity to eliminate node mapping distortions with adjustable edge node coordinates. They are also accepted to be desirable for better accuracy and lesser computation effort in the finite element studies. In this dissertation, a generalization of improved serendipity elements is presented first time for materially nonlinear problems. The formulation of improved shape functions used in universal serependipity elements are given in the second chapter. In the third chapter, one of the simplest yield criterion, von Mises yield criterion, is used in the analysis and performed numerically, since the aim of this thesis is to show the accuracy of the universal serendipity elements in nonlinear behavior. The constitutive matrix depends on the current state of stress, the response of the system depends on the deformation history and incremental relationship between displacement and force gives the solution by using nonlinear finite element method in the fourth chapter. In the fifth chapter, to examine the validity of the proposed formulations, a thick cylinder subjected to an internal pressure with the plane strain conditions was studied. A von Mises yield criterion was applied and the theoretical results were compared. The developed elements gave accurate results for the test problem used in the examples when compared to those available theoretical results. As a summary, the improved serendipity elements are used first time for materially nonlinear problems. This has been done by using an adjustable finite master element with a flexible mid-edge node locations. The improved serendipity formulation showed that it eliminates the mapping distortion errors occurred in the case of the standard formulations. Further future work can be done for transition elements.
