dc.description.abstract When a voltage difference is applied between a liquid in a capillary and an electrode, meniscus occurs on liquid’s surface. Although surface tension tries to neutralize that electrical force, conical form can be observed due to higher voltages. If sufficient voltage is applied to the system, electrostatic forces overcome the surface tension forces and droplet separation can be seen at tip of the cone. This is called electrospray injection. This atomization technique is occurred by electrical forces, pressure difference does not need to be done. Electrospray injection is a unique technique suited for very low flow rates, which can assure a uniform spray and droplet size distribution. In some systems, electrode, which is placed perpendicularly in front of the capillary, contains a hole on it. This hole is used for trimming the flow form and acquiring a regular magnetic field. This is called extractor (extraction) electrode. Sometimes two or more extractor electrodes can be seen in the system. If ground electrode is not placed in front of extractor electrode, droplets pass through the extractor electrode and thrust occurs. These systems are called colloid thrusters which are used in space applications. In single electrospray systems, mass flow rate and thrust values are very low. Therefore, multiplexed electrospray systems are used in practical applications. These systems contain more than one emitter to get more electrospray atomization. Usually extractor electrode is used in multiplexed electrospray systems. This study aims to find the effect of the extractor electrode to the electrospray injection. System contains a capillary tube, extractor electrode which is placed perpendicularly to capillary and ground electrode. Besides, experiments were carried out without using extractor. First of all, electrospray injection is described. Secondly literature survey is presented. Then, main modes of electrospray injection are described in detail. These modes are divided into two general groups. The first of these groups is identified by the characteristic that fluid fragments are ejected directly from the capillary exit, and includes the dripping, micro-dripping, and spindle and multi-spindle modes. The characteristic common to the second group is the formation of a capillary jet from the fluid meniscus, which then subsequently breaks up to form fluid droplets. This group comprises the cone-jet, precession, oscillating-jet, multi-jet and ramified-jet modes. Equations, which are used in this study, are represented in mathematical model part. Later, experimental setup was described in detail. Ethanol and methanol are used in the experiments. Borosilicate capillary tube and insulin needle are used as emitters, which have 0.1 mm and 0.23 mm inner diameters respectively. Syringe pump was used for carrying liquid to tip of the emitter. High voltage power supply was used for getting desired voltage. Aluminum made ground electrode was placed perpendicularly to the emitter, and that has 1 mm thickness. Electrospray injection was photographed by charged coupled device camera which was mounted to three-axis traverse. Microscope, which has 20 mm focal length, was mounted in front of the camera. Electrospray current was measured with a digital multimeter. 10 k-ohm control resistance was connected between the negative electrode and ground electrode. Multimeter was set to voltmeter mode, and connected parallel to control resistance to measure the voltage difference on the resistance. This operation was done to obtain the electrospray current. When system was in standby mode, only noise value can be read on the voltmeter’s panel. If electrospray occurs, noise value changes, thus, this voltage which was applied from the power supply can be noted as onset voltage. Later on, experiments were carried without using control resistance, so multimeter was set to ampermeter mode and connected directly to the system. Two different experimental setups were built. First setup does not contain extractor electrode. Capillary tube was placed in front of the ground electrode in the first system. Second set up contains extractor electrode between capillary and ground electrode. In all the experiments, extractor electrode’s voltage was set to value which is between liquid’s voltage and ground electrode. Rheostat was designed for splitting the voltage from power supply, by this means two different voltage values with one power supply could be applied simultaneously. Rheostat contains 10 resistances which has an equal value of 1 m-ohm. Extractor electrode was made of aluminum, which has a 1 mm thickness value. 3, 3.8 and 5.2 mm holes were drilled on it. In all the experiments, extractor electrode was placed with 7 mm distance from ground electrode. Rest of the system part was manufactured by poly material. Experiments are done with both glass capillary and insulin needle. Results showed that, insulin needle is more suitable than glass capillary, because glass capillary’s tip cannot be cut smoothly, thus electrospray flow could not occur regular. Undesired flows can be seen at this situation. However, when metal insulin is needle used, it can be rubbed smoothly. 0.5 ml/h syringe pump flow rate was applied in all experiments. The reason is that to hold water pressure in capillary steady. When experiments are done without using syringe pump, experiments cannot be succeed. 0.5 ml/h syringe pump flow rate was applied in all experiments. The reason is that to hold water pressure in capillary steady. When experiments are done without using syringe pump, experiments cannot be succeed. Taylor Cone can be seen in the beginning of experiments, but clear Taylor Cone can be observed without using syringe pump. When too much voltage than onset voltage is applied to the system, multijet mode occurs at the tip of capillary. This mode can be seen in most of experiment’s endings. And also, dripping and micro-dripping modes can be seen before the cone jet mode. First experiments of parametric studies are done without using extractor electrode. Both glass capillary and insulin needle was used in these experiments. Besides, methanol and ethanol was used as dielectric liquids. 0 to 7 kV voltage values are applied with 250 V intervals to system. Emitor to ground electrode distance was set to 15, 11, 10 and 5 mm distance and results are plotted. Electrospray current was measured and flow rate was calculated by current datas. Electrospray region was divided into three parts according to its modes. First part is cone jet mode part, which flows like Taylor Cone. However, when second part was examined, electrospray flowed widely, because of a wide ground electrode. Trend line was plotted with second part’s datas to get an idea about the value of onset voltage. Finally, third part was multi- jet mode part which flows with many small jets at tip of capillary. Second experiments of parametric studies were done with extractor electrode, which was placed between capillary and ground electrode. Extractor electrode was charged with a value between liquid and ground electrode. Rheostat system was used for splitting the voltage from power supply. Experiments were carried out with three different extractor holes which are 3 mm, 3.8 mm and 5.2 mm. 2 mm and 3 mm capillary to extractor distances were tried for electrospray flow.0 to 7 kV voltage values are applied with 250 V intervals to system. Experiments were stopped in 7 kV voltage value because resistances in the rheostat didn’t resist for higher voltages. At higher voltage values, liquid started to contact with extractor electrode. When this happened, experiment was stopped and the voltage value before the first contact was taken as ending voltage. This contact was seen only in 3 and 3.8 mm extractor holes. It was observed that, onset and ending voltages were increased with the increase of extractor voltage. Furthermore, operating range was measured for all extractor/liquid voltage splits. Results are plotted and photographs taken from the experiments were commented. en_US
