dc.description.abstract In recent years, flow induced noise problem has become a big concern in the engineering systems with the reduction of structure borne noise. The significant contribution to the flow induced noise in industries such as aerospace, automotive and home appliances comes from fans. With the exponential growth in the computer technology, computational methods have become more efficient tools than the experimental and the analytical methods for prediction and reduction of flow induced fan noise. Thus, Not only the cost reduction of the measurement and the prototyping has been achieved, but also the time required for the design process has been diminished. The aim of this study is to present a computational method to predict the flow induced noise in ducted fans. Two commercial softwares, FLUENT and SYSNOISE are employed for this purpose. In the frame of this thesis, the method is applied to the system, which involves an axial fan and an AC motor driving the fan in a circular duct. Unsteady flow analysis is performed with LES (Large Eddy Simulation) using Finite Volume Method (FVM) based flow solver FLUENT and then, time dependent pressure data from the flow solution is fed into the aeroacoustic module of the vibroacoustic solver SYSNOISE. The propagation of the emitted noise is computed with SYSNOISE, which is capable of solving the wave equation via different discretization techniques like Boundary Element Method (BEM). The numerically obtained acoustic results are compared with the experimental data and fairly good agreement is observed. en_US
