Öncelikle, hesaplamalı akışkanlar dinamiği yöntemleriyle gerçekleştirilen pervane çalışmalarında sıklıkla deneysel geçerliliğin (validation) kontrolü için faydalanılan David Taylor Model Basin’in 4119 numaralı pervanesi üzerinde çözümler gerçekleştirilmiştir.
dc.description.abstract Underwater acoustics has gained importance with the effective use of submarines in World War I and the studies made about this topic allowed the use of the first anti-submarine warfare system (ASW).in World War II. With the growing importance of submarine warfare in World War II the studies about underwater acoustics has improved and maintained importance with the development of sonar systems and torpedo guidance systems which form the basics of submarine weapon systems. Today while warships and submarines have to posses strong sonar systems to detect and attack other ships, they must have also an acoustic signature as low as possible for being undetected by other ships which also affects their sonar systems performance. The noise, which forms the underwater acoustic signature of a ship, can be separated into machinery noise, hydrodynamic noise and propeller noise. From these sub-groups, machinery noise has been studied for many years and the noise isolation can be made with adequate dampers and sound insulation systems. About the flow induced hydrodynamic noise the design of the hull and appendages are made in a manner to streamline the flow in order to reduce this kind of noise. On the other hand, the propeller-induced noise stands out in the noise signature character by suppressing other noise sources on the ship depending on the speed of the operation. With the use of today’s sonar systems, it is possible to determine the type, position, bearing and speed of a ship by the propeller noise which is noticed by the sonar system and it is possible to deactivate this ship with acoustic-guidance torpedoes which are the cheapest of modern torpedo systems. Thanks to the hydrophone array systems, it is possible to measure and specify the acostic signature of a ship and its propeller. However, it is far more expensive or sometimes impossible to improve these properties ones the ship is built and the propeller is manufactured. For this reason, the most crucial element in today’s warship design is to predict a ship’s acoustic signature during its design phase and continue designing in a manner of competing to reduce the signature before the construction of a ship and manufacturing of her propeller. Therefore, noise predictions for cavitating and non-cavitating propellers become a momentous subject of naval architecture for more than 50 years. Prior to the modern computers with acceptable computing capabilities, numerical methods was almost absent and Empirical, semi-empirical methods and Bernoulli-based methods have been investigated by many scientists and engineers with low accuracy and unsensitive to change in the geometry. Acoustic improvements of propellers mainly depend on trial and errors. However, generation of a method by aero-acousticians Ffowcs Williams – Hawkings (FWH) for calculation of noise of an arbitrary body moving in a fluid , can be considered a mile stone in acoustic predictions. With the advancement of computing power and numerical practice, this method became available also for hydro-acoustic predictions. Computational requirement of the FWH method mainly depend on the solution of the water flow around the propeller in time-domain. To employ the FWH method, pressure, velocity, density values of computational domain must be known precisely in time domain. While some scientists are using boundary element or finite element methods for computaional fluid dynamic calculations, in this thesis the stduy was mainly focused on the finite volume methods. After the 22nd ITTC Workshop on Propeller RANS/Panel Methods, a number of studies have been published on the using of finite element methods for the determination of propeller hydrodynamic properties and solution of the flow around the propeller. In 2004, Kawamura et. al. comparatively analyzed different turbulence models for the prediction of open water performance for a conventional propeller. In 2006, Li published his results of estimating open water characteristics of a highly skewed model propeller employing k-ω turbulence model and validation study with experimental data. Seol et. al. in 2002 , investigated the non-cavitating propeller noise employing Boundary Element Methods (BEM) for the calculation of flow around propeller in time-domain and used FWH method to predict the far-field acoustics. In 2003, Salvatore et. al. published the preliminary results for cavitating propeller noise predictions and Testa demonstrated the updated state of the studies in his PhD thesis. This thesis demonstrates the preliminary results of a TUBITAK-funded research project on the prediction of propeller induced non-cavitating noise of surface ships and underwater vehicles . A validation study for RANS calculations on the open water performance estimation of DTMB 4119 experimental propeller has been carried out. Three different computational meshes generated using ANSYS ICEMCFD for the mesh dependence study. ANSYS 13 – FLUENT was used as the cell centered finite volume solver and SST k-ω turbulance method has been selected for the RANS calculations with absolute velocity selection. Transient solution is performed with second order implicit pressure based solver. Velocity and pressure coupled via SIMPLE algorithm. Green Gauss Node Based is used for gradient and PRESTO for pressure discritizations. For Momentum, Turbulent Kinetic Energy and Specific Dissipation Rate calculations, QUICK scheme is selected. Initial calculations were performed for steady conditions, in order to validate the RANS calculations of the propeller in comparison to published experimental results. . After obtaining satisfying results from for the determination of hydrodynamic performance of the propeller, unsteady calculations were carried on. Unsteady calculations obtain solutions in time domain for pressure, velocity and density which allows employing FWH method for the prediction of far-field acoustic properties. 15 different receiver locations has been defined around the propeller and acustic data has been collected simultaneously. Results has been compared to the ones of Seol et. al.which was performed for the same propeller similar conditions. Studies carried on with a model of a warship propeller. The geometry of this five bladed highly skewed propeller prepared by rhinoceros and compurational domain prepared for meshing in ANSYS 13 Design Modeler. ANSYS ICEMCFD was employed for the generation of tetrahedral meshes. SST k-ω turbulance method has been selected for the RANS calculations. Simultaneously, acoustic measurement experiments have been conducted in the cavitation tunnel in the Ata Nutku Model Basin of Istanbul Technical University Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Faculty. The experimental setup was three folds; cavitation tunnel, PULSE analyzer and the hydrophone arrangement. Dimensions of the large sections of cavitation tunnel are 63cmx35cm (BxH). With a maximum flow speed of 4.5 m/s; all partially or fully cavitating propeller, hydrofoil or wing sections can be tested in the tunnel for open water or behind model (with wake) conditions. Brüel Kjaer PULSE acoustic measuring systems was employed for the measurements. A metal can has been manufactured and attached at the top of cavitation tunnel. The hydrophone was arranged in this water filled cylindrical can With this assembly, the distance between the hydrophone and the propeller was 0.295 m. Primary measurements were performed for the determination of back ground noise of cavitation tunnel, impeller and dynamometer. An idle model produced to simulate the propeller mass and assembled to the tunnels shaft and background noise has been measured for various advanced coefficients. Following measurements were performed with the five bladed propeller for several advanced coefficients. At the conclusion part of the thesis, pressure and pressure over time derivative contour graphics of propeller surfaces are introduced. Moreover, the acoustic solutions obtained by CFD calculations using Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings Method and from experimental measurements were compared in Sound Pressure Level (SPL) scales. Exploring these graphs shows that a shift on frequency axis and in SPL axis experienced. It is concluded that, this calculations and measurements must be performed for another propeller to show if same shift will repeat. Afterwards, an improvement for the method can be applied. It is appreciated that the experience gained from the study of this thesis offer a tool for the development of a database for the geometric design of warships, submarines, torpedo propellers, stabilizer and sonar domes. en_US
