| tr_TR |
dc.description.abstract | Bursa, once the capital of the Ottoman Empire, became an important sericulture center during the fourteenth century and preserved its importance until mid twentieth century. Starting in the nineteenth century, the Ottomans mainly produced raw silk for the developed silk weaving industry in Europe. The semi-finished production for Europe urged the import of technology from the West and the steam-powered silk factories that took an important part in Bursa s physical development started to appear around the city in the middle of the nineteenth century. With the revival of the weaving sector in the early years of the Turkish Republic, a great number of silk factories started to operate in Bursa. The sericulture came to end about 1980 with the import of cheaper silk from the Far East. Eleven silk factories exist within the historic city of Bursa. These factories that are the living documents of Bursa s sericulture history and urban development have been studied and recorded photographically. Their work-flow scheme and architectural features have been examined. 1/200 scaled surveys of factory units have been prepared. In order to preserve these buildings that are under risk due to neglect or modification, the conservation applications of similar heritage in Europe have been examined. Accordingly, conservation proposals have been developed for the industrial heritage related to sericulture in Bursa and also the re-use potentialities of these factories have been discussed. | en_US |
