In this study, the nonlinear modulation of transverse waves propagating in a generalized elastic solid is studied using a multi-scale expansion of quasi-monochromatic wave solutions. In particular, to include the higher-order nonlinear and dispersive effects in the evolution equations, higher-order perturbation equations are considered, and it is shown that the modulation of two transverse waves is governed by a pair of the coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger (HONLS) equations. It is found that the coupled HONLS equations reduce to the single HONLS equation which has already been obtained in the context of nonlinear optics, in the absence of one of the transverse waves. Moreover, the problem of nonlinear wave modulation of two transverse waves propagating in the same medium is considered near a critical wave number, called the marginal state, for which the coefficients of the nonlinear terms in the coupled NLS equations are zero. In order to include higher order nonlinear terms in the coupled evolution equations to balance the effect of dispersion, the effect of nonlinearity is intensified in the expansions. It is shown that the modulation of two transverse waves near the marginal state is governed by a pair of the coupled evolution equations called the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (GNLS) equations. It is found that the coupled GNLS equations reduce to the same form of the single GNLS equation which has already been obtained to describe the behavior of water waves about the critical wave number, k=1.363, called Benjamin-Feir instability, in the absence of one of the transverse waves.
