In this study, multilayer relaxations and local atomic relaxations in the vicinity of steps, and the properties of local force fields for several high Miller index surfaces of Cu(100) and Cu(110), with closely and loosely packed steps, are studied using by semi-empirical potential extracted from the embedded atom method. For each surface, interlayer relaxations, local atomic relaxations and force constant matrices between the atoms near / or at the surface are calculated. The data of interlayer relaxations are found to be compatible with the results of the earlier experimental and theoretical studies performed for several fcc surfaces. However, the uniformly damped behaviour of the interlayer relaxations into the bulk is not observed. Additionally, the effects of varying surface geometry, the number of atomic chains on these surface terraces, on the interlayer and local atomic relaxations are examined. The local relaxation of step chain atom (SC) along the z- direction is found to be approximately 0.1 A° for each surface, independent of the surface geometry. It is observed that the calculated force constants matrices between the atoms near the surface are modified as compared to their counterparts in the bulk, yielding perceptible atomic relaxations and noteworthy variations in the bondlengths between the atoms in the vicinity of steps.
