In this study, characteristics of Renaissance and Baroque periods that constitute an important turning point in the historical development of the garden art and their design principles are studied and examples are examined. It has been reached to the conclusion that the original philosophy, design and applications belonging to these periods that opened new horizons in the world have formed valuable examples in the garden art. It has been observed that the western perception, which at the first sight is unfamiliar to the Turkish culture and to the historical identity of Istanbul, and which completely emphasizes the visuality, was adopted with the new expansions in the westernization movement of the Ottomans, and even it has created new applications especially in our palaces through some syntheses. It has been reached to the conclusion that, after the 18th century, the traces of these periods have been observed particularly in Istanbul owing to its strategic location, and the garden designs that reflect the Renaissance and Baroque cultures have been applied in the gardens of Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi Palaces. It has been determined that it is necessary to maintain the existence of the traces of Renaissance and Baroque arts in our palace gardens which form valuable parts of our historical assets that have remained up to the date, and to protect them in order to transfer the perception of these periods to the future generations and further to value them.
