In this study, bacterial influence on metal sulfide minerals and Fe(II) oxidation was investigated as inferred from oxygen, sulfur isotopes of sulfate and Fe isotopes of Fe-oxides. Oxidation experiments for metal sulfide minerals (pyrite, sphalerite and elemental sulfur) were carried out as biological and chemical at pH 3 and 2.1. It was demonstrated that water-oxygen was the major oxygen source for sulfate produced during biotic and abiotic pyrite oxidation and that the δ18OSO4 values do not represent biological origin. Lower pH (2.1) pyrite oxidation experiments suggest that oxygen isotope exchange reactions between intermediate sulfur species and water may hinder the biological influence on the oxygen isotope of sulfate. The δ18OSO4 values from biological and chemical oxidation of sphalerite and elemental sulfur showed that water-oxygen was the only oxygen source for sulfate. The δ34SSO4 values from pyrite oxidation closely reflect the δ34S value of pyrite. Similar relation was obtained from sphalerite experiments. The δ34S value of sulfate represents the δ34S value of source sphalerite. Based on the δ18OSO4 values from metal sulfides experiments, oxidation pathways were proposed for each mineral used in the experiments. It was revealed that the δ56Fe values of Fe(III) and Fe-oxides from biotic and abiotic Fe(II) oxidation do not reflect the unique “biosignature under low pH conditions. Fe isotope “biosignatures” related to microbial oxidation of ferrous iron may not be expressed in the ferric iron products of the oxidation process, and thus will be absent in the geologic record.
