ÖgeBlade cup method for cavitation reduction in marine propellers(Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, 2022) Şamşul, Murat Burak ; Kükner, Abdi ; 724251 ; Gemi ve Deniz Teknoloji MühendisliğiCavitation is a phenomenon that affects the components of a vessel below the water-plane. In many different conditions, the components of the propulsion system must operate at the limits of their capacity. Various conditions create limits on the Naval Architect's ability to design efficient and effective propulsion system components. In most of the projects, engineers and designers focus on the propeller design at the very last stages of the project. Engine selection is performed based on the ship resistance at the target ship speed. Engine power and torque are one of the major inputs for the propeller design. The gearbox reduction ratio is the other input that has a significant influence on the propeller. After collecting all of these design inputs, there is one more major limit which is the stern shape of the boat. The stern shape has different characteristics according to the type and operating purposes of the boat. However, stern shape limits the propeller diameter in most cases. This limitation affects the design that the pitch of the propeller should be increased to reach the thrust needed for satisfying the hull speed requirements. In such cases, increasing the blade pitch leads to high pitch ratio propellers which create a risk for cavitation occurrence. Cavitation occurrence starts when the local pressure values around the blade become lower than the vaporization pressure at the operating condition. A high pitch ratio that indicates a high blade angle of attack creates a risk of cavitation in these conditions. Propeller blade cup which is a geometric change on the trailing edge of the blades can be used for cavitation reduction. The blade cup produces an additional thrust and the additional thrust provides an opportunity to reduce the blade angle of attack. The decrement in the angle of attack of the blades leads to a reduction in the cavitation risk. The main dimensions of the propeller can be determined for a vessel based on the propulsion system components. Engine determination is performed according to the aimed hull speed for the vessel. The propeller is the part that converts the engine power to thrust which is needed to reach the aimed speed. In most cases, propeller main dimensions are limited with the stern shape of the boats. This limitation leads to create highly pitched propellers to use the engine torque for reaching the top speed of the vessel. Additionally, not only the maximum speed should be satisfied but also the boat needs to operate at the design cruising speed at the efficient engine rotation speed. If all of the defined conditions and limitations are considered, operating at the aimed hull speed without propeller cavitation may not be possible by only changing the main characteristics of the propeller. The propeller cup is a trailing edge drop that can be applied to a propeller blade in order to create additional thrust. The additional thrust that is created by the blade cup leads to an increased torque of the propeller. Blade pitch reduction optimisation is performed to decrease the propeller torque to the level of the initial no-cup propeller. This optimisation process provides cavitation reduction because of the reduced blade angle of attack. In this thesis, cavitation validation is performed for both a 3D propeller and a 2D blade section. Then a 3D cavitating propeller is created and the cavitating propeller is investigated by applying different levels of blades cup by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). After showing the cavitation reduction capabilities of the propeller trailing edge cup method, the cavitating propeller is analyzed in several propeller advance ratios to understand the effects of the cup and create a blade cup drop vs. angle of attack decrement method. In the series calculation section, the 500mm diameter propeller which is used in the series calculations is converted to different cupped propellers by using the calculation results. The thrust coefficient values 0.3 and 0.32 is used and open water efficiency results are compared for the specified thrust coefficients. The results and propeller conversion examples show that the original no-cup propeller which is a cavitating propeller can be converted to light, medium or heavy cupped blades. The result graphs provide the required P/D decrement for each cupping level. Cavitation can be reduced or eliminated with the help of cupping and P/D optimisation. The open water efficiency of the propellers can be increased or kept constant.
