dc.description.abstract In the 18th century, the music industry underwent significant changes in production and consumption. Public concerts allowed music to reach wider audiences, leading to the emergence of privately funded music organizations. Composers began experimenting with musical practices to cater to audience preferences and boost sales. As part of this process, the symphonie concertante genre arose, offering an opportunity for local virtuoso players to showcase their talents. This genre had both social and musical importance, being rooted in the symphony tradition and emphasizing orchestral prominence. To promote local musicians, composers wrote symphonies with extended solo parts, enabling the soloists to gain recognition and private lessons. Various features of the genre, such as instrumentation, harmonic language, and formal structure, are explored in depth. In this study, Johann Christian Bach's works are analyzed to provide concrete insights into the genre. Johann Christian Bach's symphonie concertantes hold great value in understanding the genre's qualities and the music scene of the late 18th century. The genre's impact extends beyond the compositions, showcasing its role in shaping the musical landscape of the time. The study examines the terminology, genre-specific qualities, and social context of symphonie concertante. It traces the genre's origins to important music centers like Mannheim, Paris, and London, where Johann Christian Bach played a significant role.
