The Silent City: Reading Tomb Structures At The Latin Catholic Cemetery In Feriköy, İstanbul

Abstract

This study focuses on the Feriköy Latin Catholic Cemetery through a stylistic reading of its funerary monuments. A survey of the translocation of European cemeteries is followed by an overview of the expropriation of the Grands-Champs des Morts and history of Catholic cemeteries in the city. The catalogue is framed as an analysis of stylistic features of 172 tombs. Symbolic elements are also explained in their specific context. The study aims to relate stylistic assessments of tombs at the Feriköy cemetery to cultural identities of the Catholic community in Istanbul within the framework of architectural transformations in the urban environment.

Bu çalışma, İstanbul'daki Feriköy Latin Katolik Mezarlığında bulunan yapıların üslûp açısından incelenmesine yönelik bir araştırmayı içermektedir. Öncelikle Avrupa'da mezarlıkların şehir dışına taşınması ile İstanbul'da bulunan Katolik mezarlıkların kuruluşu ve tarihçesi ele alınmıştır. Katalog bölümünde, Feriköy'de bulunan 172 mezar seçilerek bu yapılarda kullanılan süsleme ve bezeme unsurları ayrıntıları ile incelenmiş, işaret ve sembollerin anlamları da kapsamı içinde açıklanmıştır. Çalışmaya konu olan üslûp analizinin sonuçları ele alınırken, İstanbul'daki Katolik toplumunun kültürel kimliği ile ilişkilendirilmesi ve dönemin kentsel mimari değişimleri çerçevesinde değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.
