Methane (CH4) has been the major danger for underground coal mines throughout the history of coal mining, causing catastrophic accidents. Zonguldak Bituminous Coal Basin has the highest rank coals in Turkey however, the loss of lives and production due to methane related accidents lead to constant reduction of production in the Basin. Zongıldak Bituminous Coal Basin has a strategic importance for Turkey since the country imports bituminous coal 32 times more than its production. Consequently, there have been attempts to improve labor force and pilot productions with mechanized excavation systems. Nonetheless, major obstacle to achieve these objectives is having high methane content coal seams in the Basin. Determining the gas contents of coal seams is highly important for underground coal mine planning as a whole and to ensure occupational health and safety. The main purposes of the gas content determination operations are calculating the gas emission into the mine atmosphere in order to design proper mine ventilation or gas drainage system and manifesting the outburst potential. Furthermore, methane being 28-34 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide; it is inevitable to calculate how much methane is emitted freely to atmosphere during coal production. On the other hand, methane content of coal seams has been produced and utilized as an alternative energy source aswell. This study aimed to directly measure the methane content of coal seams having been produced or under development in the coal mines of Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises, which has gassy coal mines with chronic methane related problems. In order to achieve this goal, ISO-18871 standard was followed with a specially designed underground horizontal drilling machine, which can sample coal particules from the cutting surface by vacuuming via hollow rods. Respective equipment has never been used in Turkey. The principal feature of the equipment is to avoid losing gas between cutting and sampling. From cutting the core to closing it in a sealed container takes only 2 minutes. This is made possible by an ejector that changes the direction of pressured airflow causing vacuum thorough the hollow rods. Methane contents of 15 coal seams in five TTK operated coal mines were determined by applying the aforementioned system to the samples taken from 81 underground horizontal drills. According to the methane content analyses results, 9 of 15 coal seams (highest to lowest gas content; Hacımemiş, Acılık, Büyük, Sulu, Kalın, Domuzcu, Çay, Kurul, Tavan seams) have gas contents higher than 8 m3/t in original base and higher than 10 m3/t on dry-ash free basis. The larger the lost gas time, the greater the error in total gas content calculations. An increase in the ratio of lost gas in total gas content would make it harder to reach true amounts. Q1/QT ratio is approximately 4.9% for all gas content values. These values indicate that the ratio of the lost gas in the total gas content is quite low. This situation, having very low lost gas ratios, shows that sampling time was kept very short and successful sampling practice. Q2/QT ratio is approx. 46.7% while Q3/QT ratio is approx. 48.5%. It was observed that there is a linear relationship with high correlation (R2 = 0.74) between deorbed gas (Q2) and total gas content. Based on this relationship 74% of the change in the total gas content can be explained with the change in the desorbed gas (Q2) content. Therefore, for practical purposes, the gas content of the coal seam can be estimated by simply measuring the emitted gas content. Traditionally, it is thought that coal maturity increases as the depth increases. With increasing maturity, the amount of gas produced and with increasing pressure adsorbed amount of gas in coal increases. For this reason, positive linear relationship (r = 0.71) is determined between increasing depth and gas content values throughout the Basin. The gas content values starting with 3.78 m3/t at -180 level reaching 14.66 m3/t at -630 level. In this dataset, only 51% of the change in gas content can be explained with depth. When we examine the depth-gas content relations by separating the higher rank Zonguldak region coals from Amasra and Armutçuk coals, positive linear relationship is increased (r = 0.90) and the 81% change in gas content can be explained by the depth. It can be said that there is an increase of 2 m3/t in gas content with every 100 m increase in depth, when only the Zonguldak region (Karadon, Kozlu, Üzülmez) coals are considered. Gas content of a coal seam is limited by how much gas they could derive during coalification and how much surface area have been produced to adsorb that gas. Organic/inorganic matter, inherent moisture and volatile matter contents, rank, composition of organic matter and pore characteristics are some parameters that gives insights about how much gas might be deriven and adsorbed through their maturation process. The influence of these parameters on coal seam gas content has been investigated in this study. In this regard, chemical composition of every coal sample was determined by proximate analyses. Moreover, petrographic, maceral and micro/meso porosity analyses were conducted to 30 samples. Inherent moisture and volatile matter content of the samples has a narrow range while ash content has a wide range. Inherent moisture content of different seams at different coal mines has an average of 1.55 ± 1.08%. Average volatile matter content is 25.24 ± 4.29% while ash content varied between 4.37 ile 48.38% with an average of 18.12 ± 9.77%. Since inherent moisture content has a very narrow range, a relation with gas content couldn't be determined. Since inorganic material has no or very low surface area, negative effect of ash content on gas content is revealed with a strong correlation coefficient (r=0.72). Two analyses was conducted to examine the influence of coalification process on gas content of coal seams. First one is vitrinite reflectance analyses (Ro max), having values varying between 0.746 and 0.998% with an average of 0.88%. The second coal rank indicator used is volatile matter contet of the studied coals, which have an average of 25% on original basis and 32% on dry-ash free basis. Studied coals identified as high volatile-A bituminous coals and a strong positive correlation is observed between increasing rank and gas contents. At bituminization stage, organic matter density and surface area per unit volume increases wiyh the compaction of molecular structure of coal. There is a significant increase in thermogenic gas production and in gas holding capacity at this coalification stage. The volatile matter content of the coals decreases during the bituminization stage and large pore sizes are reduced by the effect of compression. With the downsizing of pores there would be more surface area meaning more places for gas molecules to be adsorbed. The quality of the coal decreases, as the amount of volatile matter increases, therefore gas content decreases as well. Negative relationship between volatile matter and gas content is observed in studied coals, as well as positive relationship between vitrinit reflectance and gas content. Maceral analyses were conducted to understand the origins of organic matter in coal and their contribution to gas content. Vitrinit group macerals varied between 55 and 86% as the dominant group, inertinit group macerals followed with 9-29% and finally liptinit group varied between 2 and 17%. Results showed that coals have appropriate vitrinite and inertinit amounts for coking and relatively low inorganic matter. In addition, it is observed that the gas contents have positive relation with vitrinite goup macerals and negative relation with inertinit and liptinit group macerals. These relations are expected since vitrinite macerals consist of micro and meso pore structure. Moreover, liptinit macerals produce hydrogen rich kerogens and oil products while having macro pores. Also, inertinit macerals have no potential to produce hydrocarbons and have mostly mesopores. Therefore, negative relationships with gas content is also expected. When major coal seams analyzed individually, correlations are significantly higher. Low-pressure adsorption tests were conducted to determine the nano porosity characteristics of the studied coals. N2 adsorption isotherms are type II isotherms with H3 type hysteresis while CO2 adsorption isotherms are type I. Average micropore surface area of the coals is 104.20 m2/g while average meso pore surface area is 0.73 m2/g showing the dominant structure for methane adsorption is micro pores surface area and volume. For mesopores; Çay seam has the highest average surface area/volume and smallest pore sizes, Hacimemiş seam has the lowest mean surface area and volume and the largest pore sizes. For micropores; Sulu seam has the highest surface area, Büyük seam has the largest volume while Domuzcu seam has lowest surface area and Çay seam has the smallest volume. Even though mesopore surface area has a narrow range for the coals in question, negative relationship between gas content and mesopore surface area is observed. The reason for this negative relationship is the decrease of mesoporosity as coal matures and giving place to micropores. The increase in microporosity with coal maturation is also observed and the positive relationship of micropore surface area and gas content is determined. It is observed that lowest gas contents are belong to faces. The gateways opened some time before and the face itself are large desorption surfaces causing CH4 to emit into the mine atmosphere. Therefore it is very important to take coal samples from virgin locations. These locations might be the faces of newly cut development galleries (main or gateways). Every mine in Zonguldak should establish a "gas content determination team" and maintain a regular and continous schedule for sampling drills and gas content determinations. Even though gas content determination is the base parameter for a proper "seam gas management plan", tectonic stress zones, gas pressures, permeabilities, adsorption capacities and gas saturations of coal seams should be determined. Thus, methane drainage posibilities could be evaluated.
