Nowadays, studies on determining the current situation in combating climate change, which is the most important environmental problem, have been continued in many different areas. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been published Assessment Reports every 7 years within the scope of creating the and combating climate change. The last 5th Assessment Report (AR5) published in 2013, it is expected that the sea level will rise in the following periods, the air temperatures will increase, the frequency and amount of precipitation will be changed, the duration of drought will become severe and the extreme weather events will increase. In the Mediterranean Basin, where our country is located, significant effects of climate change on food, livestock, tourism, insurance, etc. It is stated that it will create enormous effects on different sectors. In recent years, important studies have been carried out in the adaptation process to climate change by understanding the agriculture sector, which has become more important. The concept of water footprint (WF) is an indicator, which is introduced in 2002. The WF represents the volume of freshwater used to the production process and it is measured on all levels of the supply chain. Showing water consumption and polluted water volumes by source and type of pollution, WF comprises of components like blue, green, and grey WFs. Blue WF is estimated in crop production with irrigated agriculture while green WF is determined in rainfed agriculture conditions. Grey WF involves the information about groundwater pollution because of fertilization. To date, there were a lot of studies on the determination of WF in different sectors with different approaches. This thesis research area, Thrace Part of Turkey, which is one of the most important agricultural areas in our country, as is commonly grown sunflower and winter wheat cultivation. The purpose of this study is to determine the actual crop WF and yield with field measurements and model and future potential WF and yield of these crops with well-accepted crop growth simulation models. It is also aimed to determine the meteorological and agricultural drought conditions using different indices. Crop growth simulation models have been experimented at many different locations and the development processes have been continued. AquaCrop, DSSAT, and WOFOST (hereafter models were given in the same orders) models have been developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), The International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer (IBSNAT), Wageningen University, respectively. In this thesis, these models were calibrated based on crop yields between the years of 2014-2018. In this period, the average yields of sunflower and wheat in Thrace were 2.21 and 4.46 t/ha, respectively. According to AquaCrop, DSSAT, and WOFOST results, sunflower yields were modelled and relative errors (RE) were calculated as 4.7, -0.3, and 7.2%; normalized root mean square errors (NRMSE) as 5.5, 5.3, and 7.3%; mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) as 4.7, 4.7, and 7.2%, respectively. Besides, wheat yields were modelled and REs were calculated as 0.5, -4.8, and 3.3%; NRMSEs as 3.3, 7.3, and 5.7%; MAPEs as 3.2, 6.3, and 5.6%, respectively. After the calibration, the WF values of sunflower and winter wheat crops, which were grown in dry conditions, were calculated using the formula related to conditions between the evapotranspiration (ET) values and the effective precipitation (Peff). In order to calculate Peff, there are two different equations (in the USDA method) depending on whether the total daily precipitation is less than 8.3 mm. The cumulated values of these variables were calculated during the growing periods of crops and the total ETgreen value was obtained. The amount of green WF was calculated when the total ET value divided by the yield. In the soil water balance (SWB) method, capillary rise, drainage, and surface runoff were neglected to calculate ET. ET was calculated by using SWB method with the help of temporal changes in soil water content measurements and precipitation. The crop WF values were calculated according to this method and compared with AquaCrop, DSSAT, and WOFOST models. In the Thrace region of Turkey, the WFs of sunflower and wheat were calculated as 377.0 and 452.7 m3/t with SWB method, respectively. Additionally, WF results for sunflower modelled by AquaCrop, DSSAT, and WOFOST models were estimated as 388.6, 444.9, and 453.1 m3/t, respectively. In the same order of results of winter wheat's WF were calculated as 359.0, 218.3, and 291.7 m3/t. Upon completion of the calibration procedures of the models, 93 different scenarios were created to determine the temperature, precipitation, and global solar radiation changes on crop yield and WF amounts, and sensitivity analyses were performed. In order to determine the effects of climate change in the agricultural ecosystem in Thrace, the EURO-CORDEX (hereafter CORDEX) data were produced by the HadGEM2-ES global circulation model. Then these data were statistically downscaled with the HIRHAM5 regional climate model (Resolution of 0.11° (~12.5 km)) using two different scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 (optimistic) and RCP 8.5 (pessimistic)) until 2099. Bias correction must be applied to CORDEX data to represent the status of the region, which was produced daily by the models from 1971 to 2099. After this stage, the modeled and actual (measurement) data between reference years (1971-2000) were compared and using thes differences bias were corrected for the future data. There are many different methods for correcting the raw model data. The methods commonly used in recent years have been used. In this study, bias correction of maximum, minimum, and average temperature were done using simple mean seasonal bias correction. Moreover, quantile mapping (QM) method was applied to the for bias corection of precipitation, relative humidity, wind intensity, and global radiation values. The reason for applying different bias correction methods was because of different distributions of data due to their nature. The daily data measured by 9 different stations making long-term measurements in Thrace were obtained from the Turkish State Meteorology Service (TSMS) and used to correct CORDEX data. By obtaining corrected data, the region's future temperature, precipitation etc. the prospective conditions of meteorological variables were determined in three different time intervals (P1: 2020-2040; P2: 2041-2070; P3: 2071-2099) for the growing periods of sunflower and wheat. Changes of meteorological variables were calculated according to the TSMS measurements between 1971-2019 years. Average temperature change across the region during the months when the sunflower may increase as 3.7°C for P1, 4.1°C for P2 and 4.3°C for P3 in RCP 4.5 ; as 6.1°C for P1, 6.8°C for P2 and 7.8°C for P3 in in the RCP 8.5 scenario. While changes (decrease) in precipitation amount were found as 22.8, 20.0 and 16.9% in RCP 4.5 scenario P1, P2, and P3 periods, they were calculated in RCP 8.5 scenario as 50.8, 54.4 and 54.2%, respectively. Average temperature change in the region during the months when the wheat grows in RCP 4.5 scenario during periods P1, P2 and P3 3.1°C, 3.3°C, 3.4°C; in RCP 8.5 scenario changes in periods 5.6°C, 6.1°C, 7.0°C, respectively. Differences in precipitation amount was calculated as 15.0%, 12.0%, and 18.4% in RCP 4.5 scenario P1, P2, and P3 periods; RCP 8.5 scenario was calculated to decrease by 15.6%, 17.1% and 17.4% in P1, P2 and P3 periods. Crop yields and WFs values were simulated for RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios in Edirne, Kırklareli, and Tekirdağ provinces where models calibration were performed. Besides, the atmospheric CO2 concentration amount, which were determined for the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios per year by IPCC, was also entered into the models as an input data. According to the results of models, changes in sunflower yield and WF until 2099 were -14.3 and -26.6% in AquaCrop; -15.6 and -30.8% in DSSAT; -25.9 and +7.6% WOFOST, in RCP 4.5 scenario. The yield changes in the RCP 8.5 scenario may be decreased by 10.1, 18.6 and 35.6% respectively. It was also determined that changes in sunflower WF decreased by 61.2, 62.1, and 38.5% in RCP 8.5, respectively. According to wheat simulations, the changes in yields in RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios was found as +18.3 and +27.7% in AquaCrop; -17.3 and -20.6% in DSSAT; +9.4 and -2.0% in WOFOST. The changes in the same order of WFs was calculated as -63.4 and -75.7%; +26.8 and -25.9%; -24.5 and -50.1%, respectively. In addition to these simulations, Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), and self-calibrated PDSI (sc-PDSI) indexes, which were used to determine the drought situation in Thrace, and their values in the periods when sunflower and wheat growing periods from 2020 to 2099 were calculated. While calculating these indices, the potential evapotranspiration (PET) value was calculated according to the Penman Monteith method and monthly maximum-minimum temperature, wind speed in 2 meters, global solar radiation, latitude, altitude are required. In addition to the PET data, monthly total precipitation and soil available water capacity (AWC) values are required to calculate PDSI indexes. The SPEI and sc-PDSI indices could be comparable results when examining drought conditions in different stations and regions in the same period. SPEI index refers to meteorological drought in 3-month period calculations, agricultural drought in 6 and 9-month calculations, and hydrological drought in 12-month calculations. Sc-PDSI index is used to determine meteorological and agricultural drought. In the sunflower growing season, the drought situation in the calculations of 3, 6, 9, and 12 months was determined as normal condition in the RCP 4.5 scenario. This situation was calculated as normal condition in the RCP 8.5 scenario as well. In the wheat growing seasons, SPEI index of different time scales, the drought situation was calculated as normal in optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. Sc-PDSI index of sunflower growing season in RCP 4.5 and 8.5, was evaluated near normal in P1; incipient drought in the P2 period; near normal and incipient drought in P3, respectively. For the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios during the wheat growing seasons, it may be calculated as near normal in the P1, P2, P3 periods, respectively.
