dc.description.abstract Architects use different kind of tools in the architectural design phase. Architectural tools both transfer and shape architects' thoughts. Technological advances affect design methods and architectural design gets enriched in terms of methods and products. Now it is easier to access ideas that are impossible or very difficult to implement with traditional architectural tools. By using the adaptation ability of the computers, the contribution of these new techniques to the conceptual design of tall buildings is the subject of this thesis study. The aim is to create a design environment to help architects model their ideas rapidly by using their mobile devices in the absence of a computer. The design environment will allow quick sharing of ideas about the design product with other people while making inferences in order to reflect design thinking. Computers are used to increase productivity. Efficiency in the architectural studies can be improved by developing new concepts and methods. Digital architectural tools which were used as information carriers between different media are now being used to guide the design. Conceptual design in architecture, digital tools, sketching and modelling, computer graphics related to the digital model, representation techniques, and the use of augmented reality in the early design process are taken into consideration. Based on these contents, a new mobile architectural design application has been developed. In order to discuss the results in the thesis study, usage experiments have been carried out. In the introduction, the purpose of the research, the definition of the problem, the results to be obtained from the thesis, and the contribution that can be made to the architectural profession and the field of education are mentioned, and the path followed by the research has been explained. In this direction, the objectives of the thesis are summarized as follows; to provide the opportunity to test mass alternatives with surrounding structures and topography on the project area by utilizing augmented reality (AR) systems; developing a mobile digital environment close to modelling competence as if working on a physical model; to be able to produce physical models of mass models developed in the digital environment with the modelling technique that the architect is used to; to assist design in a topic where vertical design problem is important, such as high-rise buildings. First, problems encountered in the early stages of design in digital environment are reviewed by literature search. The scope of the thesis is limited to the early design process on the computer in order to provide different possibilities for creative activities in the digital environment. Thinking with sketches in early design architectural activities, model making and digital model creation conceptual design, augmented reality, representation in design are included. In the second chapter, the conceptual stage in architectural design, its effect on the architectural design process and the perspectives of researchers on this process from different disciplines are explained. The role of sketching and modelling activities in the conceptual design process is explored. In the third chapter, digital design environments and production tools are included. Basic representations such as point, curve, surface, and solid models as representation methods are referred. Also, the last part of this topic is dedicated to augmented reality technology. The augmented reality history, applications, usage areas in architectural design are explained. In the fourth chapter, examples of tall buildings designed using traditional methods and innovative tools are included under the topic of conceptual design of high-rise buildings. High-rise buildings selected for testing the mobile application are listed. The beginning of the fifth chapter describes the steps taken to develop tools to support the productive process in early architectural design. Research on software and hardware to be used for the creation of the application, prototypes, versions, and modelling techniques are explained. At the end of the chapter, there are different criteria to be used when evaluating the software from three different points of view. In the sixth chapter, the structure of the newly developed mobile architecture tool is explained. The necessary elements for this environment, the use of the tool, testing within the specified scenarios, and collecting the results were presented. With the information obtained after the development process, the latest version of the mobile tool, which consists of three methods is finalized. Experiments of modelling studies and surveys were conducted with ten experienced architects. Questionnaires for the modelling process and graphical interface surveys for interaction with the tool were conducted. Retrospective action-based analyzes were made with the video recording of the modelling studies. In order to determine similar modelling approaches, the analyzes were compared using timeline graphs and similar patterns were interpreted. The results are explained in the seventh and last part. Initial hypothesis is reevaluated and it is discussed whether the productive process can be supported or not. The potentials of the study that can be improved prospectively are presented. Finally, the mobile application process was evaluated with a questionnaire, users generally found the modelling methods useful, but stated that it did not provide a faster process compared to the 3D modelling environments they use frequently. The idea of using such a tool when starting a new design was welcomed, however, the highest level of survey score was not obtained. According to the retrospective evaluations of the recorded videos; it was observed that the architects participating in the experiment developed models with similar processes while drawing in the 3D Sketching method. In this method, which aims to perform a freehand drawing activity digitally, different people followed individual routes such as scale usage, speed, detailing, and use of color. However, the design processes are very similar in terms of primary decisions. In another method, Virtual Bricks (Voxel Modelling) technique, while the beginning of the process is similar, each user shows an approach that differs according to themselves in the remaining part of study. Architects can express themselves in various ways in this method. Virtual Bricks (Voxel Modelling) technique stands out compared to other methods in terms of easy understanding. In the Virtual Model (Solid Modelling) method, it has been observed that similar processes are formed in the use of the proposed cutting tool and object transposition functions. Although three augmented reality-based production methods were presented for the first time, users experienced an easy process in terms of adaptation to these approaches. It can be said that it is an important advantage of the new mobile environment that it provides modelling opportunity in the process of creation of the first design ideas, independent of computer hardware and software. Models made from the mobile environment are converted into finished models as 3-dimensional objects. These are transferred to the computer environment with standard file explorer applications as OBJ format. Files of this format are compatible with most computer-aided modelling software. In non-compatible programs, it is possible to use the file by converting it to other types. Models produced on the mobile device can be directly imported into most of the 3D printer control software. The three basic methods in the modelling environment, 3D sketching, voxel modelling (virtual brick) and solid modelling (virtual model), have taken their place in the tool as simulations of real-world design actions in early design phase. However, evolutionary approaches and parametric design configurations can be applied at this stage and they can be integrated into the software to support rapid production. In this way, the options of answering the design problems of the tool are expanded. For example, a simple and quick parametric design can be created as an initial design with free-hand drawn curves as the inputs. Formulas that create the model relations can be utilized with this input. Self-generating models can be constructed by defining the digital agents that interact with the mass model in the augmented reality environment. Along with similar expansions, the concept of computer creativity, which offers unexpected options to the user and has a surprising factor for the designer can also be discussed. In this way, both real-world activities are reinforced with the support of the virtual world, and unique features of computer technology can be integrated into the studies. With the implementation of the collaborative working feature, it is expected that the communication will increase in the context of design and the activities will improve. When a multi-user environment is provided, the model being worked on can be viewed at the same time by different users or even modified at the same time. These include scenarios such as where people are in the same environment and in different environments work seamlessly. Multiple users can work on different scales and sizes. While a designer is working on a model on his mobile phone, the other designer can follow accordingly and give feedback on a tablet device. Moreover, the computer screen can be used as a second display device. The computer and mobile device can be operated on the same system and it can be used interchangeably for primary and secondary user inputs. The designer can reflect his ideas with his mobile device to the virtual world on the computer screen in real-time, or manipulate primitive digital objects created on the computer using augmented reality-supported movements and view it on the computer again. With such innovative actions, effective design scenarios can be created both for individual use and in collaborative situations. In summary, proposed tool in the study can be transformed into a design environment to be used in design problems of all sizes, in addition to a high-rise buildings topic. In all design problems with the goal of form development, the advantages of being able to produce 3-dimensional models quickly without the need for additional equipment can be useful. It can be used as a teaching method in design activities such as form creation, digital modelling and three-dimensional thinking in architectural education. With the development of this tool, it is expected to create an example that actively assists in the exploration of design ideas at an early stage. Since the created models can be converted to various file formats, they can be used by other computer applications in different ways. Models can be processed for visualization or simulation purposes, contributing to the clarification of design ideas. As a result, it can be said that the mobile design environment produced within the scope of the thesis has carried through the "ideation" activity with the aim of rapid production of digital models.
