Thanks to development of customers comfort perception in recent years, automobile manufacturers give priority to vibration and acoustic studies more and more, especially for new models. Providing driver and passenger comfort requires more noiseless cabin environment. Today, all automobile manufacturers have their own vibration and acoustics departments to produce more competitive automobiles. Interior cabin noise in automobiles arises from three main sources. The first noise source is structural noise. Engine and road vibrations turn into noise from cabin panels. The second one is airborne noise which is caused by engine and exhaust silencer's noise which directly transmits into the cabin. The third one is aeroacoustic noise which becomes the primary noise source for cabin at high speeds. Providing acoustic comfort is an important topic for automotive industry. It requires to take precautions with respect to the type of the noise sources. Vehicle door seals which is the topic of this study plays an important role on providing cabin acoustic comfort beside on providing water, dust and heat impermeability for vehicle cabins. Vehicle door seals are one of the main noise control precautions especially for airborne and aeroacoustic noise sources. The acoustical performance evaluation of vehicle door seals consists on vehicle applications and also laboratory measurements. On vehicle evaluations give direct results for whole seal performance while laboratory measurements gives relative results. By laboratory measurements, only the limited length of the seal profile can be measured within the source room and receiver room. Different sections of the seal profile can not be evaluated simultaneously. Automobile manufacturers are created their own full seal acoustic performance estimation methods by using mentioned section measurements. The acoustical performance evaluation parameters of vehicle car door seals are listed as Insertion Loss (IL), Noise Reduction (NR) and Sound Transmission Loss (TL). IL is defined as sound pressure level difference between the inlet and the outlet of a specimen. NR is defined as sound pressure level difference of the outlet of a specimen with and without installed it. TL is defined as the sound power difference between the inlet and the outlet of a specimen. While IL and NR depends on the noise source and measurement location, TL depends on only specimen type. Evaluation of acoustic performance of car door seals, TL gives more independent information. It provides the possibility to evaluate seal performance only. In this study, TL is used as acoustic performance indicator for different car door seals. Usually, two different seals are used in cars: The primary seal and secondary seal. Primary seals are made of less stiff materials to ensure good impermeability. Secondary seals usually are much stiffer than the primary one. Seals which are installed between door and car body contains different materials, such as rubber materials which have different stiffness and densities and metal supports which provide the installation. Car door seals are made of rubber materials which have non-linear deformation behaviour. Under dynamic excitation, visco-elastic materials have frequency dependent storage and loss modulus. These properties are measured by Dynamic Mechanical Analyzers (DMA). In this study the effect of using frequency dependent material properties is also investigated and necessary of using frequency dependent modulus and loss factor is discussed. Manufacturing of sealing profiles is costly due to the mold production requirements. Considering the difficulty and cost of prototype production, computer aided engineering studies become reasonable to determine the acoustic performance of the sealing profiles in the beginning of a design process. While car doors are closed, the seals are non-linearly deformed and get their final shapes. In this study, the deformed shapes of vehicle door seals are investigated via vibro-acoustics analysis. The deformed shapes are provided after non-linear deformation analysis and pre-stress effect is neglected for the vibro-acoustics analysis. In experimental work, fixtures are used to deform the seal to its final shape and acoustic measurements performed after the installation of seals to test fixture. To determine the acoustic performance of car door seals, numerical analysis are performed. The non-linear deformation analysis is performed first and its result, the deformed shape is used to perform sound transmission loss analysis. Non-linear deformation analysis are performed by seal manufacturers to determine door closing effort. Its result is became the input of transmission loss analysis. Deformed geometry is prepared for acoustics analysis first. For this purpose the acoustic cavity is modelled, inlet and outlet regions of the seal is also created. After creating CAD model, the model is meshed with respect to acoustics analysis requirements and the acoustic and solid domains are defined, excitation and calculation surfaces are created. In this study, the structural properties of seal materials are determined by impedance tube TL measurements and numerical TL analysis. The TL analysis results are fit to experimental results by changing the unknown elasticity modulus and loss factor. For three different seal materials mentioned study is performed and elasticity modulus and loss factors of the specimens are determined. The material properties than used to perform diffuse field sound transmission loss analysis for evaluating seal acoustic performance. Vehicle door seals are excited by diffuse sound field in working conditions. This excitation is simulated in numerical analysis, too. For this purpose, a diffuse sound field excitation component which is available in finite element acoustics package software is used. The component consists several plane wave sound sources which are located around the inlet of the seal and have different amplitude and phase properties which makes the total pressure power spectral density is same for every sample. In this thesis, numerical analysis and experimental works are performed for evaluation of acoustic performance of the vehicle door seals. Required structural properties of sealing profile materials for numerical analysis are determined by impedance tube TL measurements and numerical analysis results. Transmission loss analysis infrastructure is established for complex vehicle door seals under diffuse field excitation. Measurements and analysis sound transmission loss results of the sealing profiles are compared. Acoustic design criterions for vehicle door seals are investigated with parametric analysis studies and for a complex vehicle door seal system, TL improvement study is carried out.
