The main two methods can be mentioned that modeling of catchment behavior which is described as a system which transforms precipitation falling on into runoff. The first of these is the parametric models and these models analyze the transforming process separated by components such as infiltration, groundwater flow and surface runoff. Parametric models express relationships between these components in a physically very detailed manner. However, the construction of these models is very difficult because of the fact that the analysis of the catchment behavior is very complex in physical manner. For this reason, usually some simplifications (assumptions) are made. Each assumption casts out the model a little more from realities. In the second method of rainfall-runoff modeling catchment behavior (transforming process) is accepted as a black-box system and the events that occurred in the catchment are not physically examined in detail. When this second method is used primarily the behavior of the system (behavior of the catchment or transforming process) is determined by given rainfall and runoff values while taking into account the effective laws of nature. The most important application of the black box modeling of relationships between rainfall and runoff with system approach is the unit hydrograph model. However, because of the difficulties in the non-linear systems examination the system was considered to be linear in the unit hydrograph model. The most important factor of undermine the acceptance of linearity is that the lag time is not constant. The lag time that is a function of overland and stream flow velocities depend on the quantity of water, therefore it depends on the intensity of excess rainfall. While overland flow velocities determine the lag time in the small catchment, stream flow velocities become important in the large catchment. The parts of precipitation at the anytime which kept by the vegetation and accumulated in pits and infiltrated to soil depend on the degree of wetness of vegetation, the volume of water previously accumulated in the pits and the degree of soil moisture therefore they depend on the previous precipitation. For this reason, nonlinear models are needed that takes into account the effects of previous rainfall. The function of system behavior is expressed with the functional series (Volterra integral) in early non-linear rainfall-flow models. The most important weakness of these models is not having any physical meaning. Furthermore, to use the most general practically applicable form of the functional series comes to mind for a system that has an unknown nonlinearity degree, but the data must be very accurate at such an application. When the incorrect data is used significant errors occur in determining the functions of system behavior. Because such a model will have higher adaptability than necessary and sufficient amount and because of the fact that the functions of catchment behavior will not be able to distinguish between the behavior of the system and errors, it will adapt all of them. The difficulties in determining the behavior functions of high-grade functional are deterrent in the third and higher-grade applications of models. For this reason, until now the studies have been done with only linear and quadratic (second-degree) models. When the results of linear and quadratic models are compared, it is shown that the quadratic terms significantly contribute to sensitization. Muftuoglu (1984b) developed simplified two dimensional unit hydrograph model (STDUH) that does not have functional series weaknesses. In this model, the delayed response of the catchment by the linear and the immediate and moderately delayed response of the catchment were represented by the second-order non-linear functional. Applications of the model have shown that; STDUH model provides better results than functional series and second order nonlinear models. Although STDUH model produces good results, it has a significant weakness. In the model, exact boundary separation of base flow which forms linear part and direct runoff which forms non-linear part leads to errors especially in maximum flow predictions (Such as in the model assumption of forming of precipitation direct runoff until three days ago from today and forming of previous precipitation base flow). Because, as it is known mostly recent precipitations affect present flow. However in STDUH model while kernels which form linear part and belongs to long time ago takes great values, the other kernels which form non-linear part and belongs to recent takes small values (to understand better these kernels, they can be considered as weight coefficients in ANNs). The most important reason of this, kernels form output (runoff) from input (precipitation) with a parallel operation. In this study a new and second order non-linear model that does not have the weakness of STDUH model was developed. The new model is divided into two parts as linear and non-linear like in STDUH model. As different from STDUH model in the linear part of the new model, recent precipitations which form base flow was also considered. Therefore, a cascading structure was created regarding the effect of model transforming function of precipitations that form base flow and direct flow. While the linear and non-linear rainfall-runoff models that were constructed previously are based on Aristotelian philosophy (0 or 1) the new model is based on fuzzy logic philosophy (between 0 and 1). The next stage of the study is rising the model performance by using the artificial intelligence techniques (artificial neural network and fuzzy logic) that use the parameters of the new model and takes place in recent hydrological studies. Important linear and non-linear models in literature were used for comparison of model performance like unit hydrograph and simplified two dimensional unit hydrograph. In all applications, performances of models were assessed by using three criteria which are accepted by ASCE Task Committee (1993). These are root mean square error RMSE, Nash and Sutcliffe coefficient R2 and relative (percentage) error % D. The applications have shown that the developed new model has a better performance than the other models. In the third and last stage of the study a new and effective technique was suggested regarding determination of parameters which are able to be used in all linear and non-linear models and form total catchment memory (system memory). It is seen that when the technique is used, necessary modeling number that shows characteristics of the catchment are quite reduced.
