Son on beş yıllık süreçte dünyada rüzgar enerjisi kurulu gücü 37 kat büyüyerek 300 GW'a yaklaşmıştır.
Wind energy, which has become the most important factor of energy policy for countries recent years has been used by mankind for centuries in many different areas. Wind was used for grain milling, sailing vessels, pumping the water in the past and now contributes to energy diversification by energy production in large scale power plants. Because of its unlimited resource, easy production and fossil fuel productions' damage to the environment become a bigger problem day by day, wind energy has become crucial. Energy diversity is one of the main part of the energy policy of countries, however it has been considered for last two decades. With the development of technologies, decrease of the production cost, and awareness of countries about clean energy, wind energy has shown a notable development around the world. By the end of 2012, global installed wind power capacity has reached 282430 MW which is 37 times higher than just 15 years ago. Turkey has one of the fastest growing wind energy sectors in the world where great wind resources especially along the Aegean, Marmara and eastern Mediterranean shore. Wind energy has reached over 2 GW of installed capacity and 4% of total electricity generating capacity by the end of the 2012. Turkey aims to produce 30% of its electricity from renewables which means 20 GW installed capacity in ten years. Nowadays modern turbines are capable to produce more power as the height of the turbine rotor increases. The most important problem for wind energy production is estimation of the wind energy potential for the planned plant region exactly. Measurement heights of meteorological towers are generally lower than turbine hub-heights. An error of 1% in wind speed measurements leads to almost 2% error in energy output and it's not acceptable for such a huge investment, therefore wind speed extrapolation models are used for estimation wind speed and energy potential of hub heights. For the feasibility studies before the installation and planning the production while operating the wind farm, detailed analysis should be carried out. To specify the wind profile of the planned plant area measurements and assessments need to be done at specified points and heights. Accurate measurements to predict wind speed is crucial for energy production estimation. Wind energy potential is not easily estimated, because it strongly linked with topography and local site characteristics. The purpose of this study to clarify the uncertainity for predicting wind speed from lower to upper heights. Study presents 16 different calculation methods of 50 m hub height wind speed by using measured values of wind speed at 10, 30 m above ground level. 50 m wind speed datas are also known which provide to make error analysis. Estimated 50 m wind speed values are used for energy generation, capacity factor and error analysis by choosing 7 different proper turbine for 50 m hub-height.
