Kamusal Alanın Üretimi: Taksim Meydanı

Abstract

Taksim Meydanı Türkiye'nin kültür üretiminin temsili sahnesi olarak cumhuriyetin modernlik projesinin başlangıcından bugüne özellikle kamusal alan tartışmalarının ve kamusal alanda faklı söylem gruplarının çatışmalarının merkezindedir. Meydan günümüzde farklı hükümetlerin ideolojilerinin, kullanıcıların ve kaçınılmaz olarak küresel sermaye piyasasının temsillerinin bir bütünü olarak karşımıza çıkar. Çalışma, meydanın nasıl temsiliyet kazandığı ve bu temsiliyetler doğrultusunda sosyo-ekonomik, fiziksel ve politik olarak nasıl dönüştüğünü incelerken kamusallık halinin nasıl aşındığını tartışır. Meydanı'nın bir yüzyıllık hikâyesi, Türkiye'de kamusal alanın inşasının, çeşitli ideolojiler doğrultusunda temsiliyet kazanarak aşındırılmasına dair çarpıcı bir örnek teşkil eder. Tez Taksim Meydanı ve çevresini içeren sınırlı bir coğrafi bölgenin yüzyıllık kentsel dönüşümünü incelese de sosyal, politik, ekonomik olarak zaman mekân bağlamında daha geniş bir coğrafyayı kapsar. Gezi olayları ile gündemde olan Taksim Meydanı ve kamusal alan meselelerine yeni bir yaklaşım getirmeyi hedefleyen bu tez, Taksim Meydanı üzerinden Türkiye'de kamusal alan kavramını irdeleyerek, alternatif sözler üretir. Çalışma, belge taraması ile literatürde bulunmayan tarihsel verileri ortaya çıkartarak Taksim Meydanı'na dair anlatılara yeni odaklar oluşturur. Bu çalışma mevcut kamusal alan söylemlerine alternatif kamusallık tanımları ve kullanım örüntüleri tespitleri ile Taksim Meydanı üzerinden bir anlatı olarak mevcut literatüre eklemlenebilir.

Taksim Square - a stage where Turkey’s cultural output is exhibited - has been in the centre of debate and conflict since the beginning of the Republic’s modernity project: debate on the concept of public space and conflict between various groups with differing political discourse. Today's Taksim signifies a culmination of ideologies and interventions of different governments, users and, inevitably, global business. This thesis discusses what the Square represents, how these representations evolved, how they molded the square’s socio-economic, physical and political transformation while eroding its public nature.A century long story of the Square is a striking example of the erosion of the construction of a public space, as various ideologies intervened to change what the square signified. Although this thesis examines the urban transformation of a limited area - transformation of Taksim Square and its surrounds over one hundred years - it is also relevant socially, politically, economically and in the context of time and space for a much wider geography. Taksim Square recently came into prominence after Gezi protests. This thesis aims to bring a new approach to the question of public space. Studying the transformation of Taksim Square, it examines the concept of public space in Turkey and produces an alternative narrative on public space. In the process of the research, a number of historical documents, which are not quoted in current academic literature, have come to light. These sources should help telling Taksim’s story from new vantage points. This thesis, with its alternative definitions for public space and findings on patterns of usage of public space, can be appended to the existing academic literature.
