In the first part of the present study, an asymptotic membrane theory for finite axially symmetric deformations of nonlinearly elastic circular cylindrical tubes is derived. In the second part, a Godunov-type finite volume method is used to solve numerically an impact problem defined for a circular cylindrical onlinearly elastic membrane tube. In Chapter 2, a brief introduction to the basic equations of finite elasticity theory is given and the three-dimensional problem for a hollow circular cylinder made of a general homogeneous isotropic nonlinearly elastic material is described. In Chapter 3, an asymptotic expansion theory is used to obtain an asymptotic membrane theory of a thin-walled circular cylindrical tube composed of an incompressible hyperelastic material. The tube is subjected to both tangential and normal tractions on its inner surface while the outer surface is free of tractions. The equations governing dynamic axially symmetric deformations of the membrane tube are obtained for an arbitrary form of the strain-energy function. The analysis is also extended to the case of a compressible hyperelastic tube. Chapter 4 is devoted to a study of the Godunov-type second-order finite volume method proposed for the numerical solution of one dimensional systems of nonlinear conservation laws with source terms. The numerical method is used in Chaper 5 to solve the equations governing dynamic deformations of a nonlinear elastic membrane tube when it is subjected to a dynamic extension. Numerical results are given for the Mooney-Rivlin and neo-Hookean incompressible materials. The question how the present numerical results are related to those obtained in the literature is discussed. The same problem is also studied for both the neo-Hookean compressible material and the Blatz-Ko compressible material. Conclusions are drawn in Chapter 6.
