İstanbul’da Yeni İşlevlerle Kullanılan Tarihi Yapıların Üslup Sorunsalı

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın konusu, tarihi yapıların yeniden işlevlendirmesinde mevcut yapıların tarihi birikimleri ve gelecek arasında bir tasarım geliştirmeyi içerdiği için titizlikle uygulanması gereken tasarım sorunsalıdır. Tarihsel sürekliliğin bir parçası olan tasarımlar, yapının kendisinden bağımsız tutulamaz. Tezin asıl inceleme alanını oluşturan üslup sorunsalının mimarlık tarihi açısından analizi için önce teorik zemin, tarihsel arka plan, mevcut yaklaşımlar ve problemler tartışılmıştır. İstanbul’dan seçilmiş dönüştürme projelerinde, yapıların taşıdığı tarihsel, yapısal ve kültürel özellikler araştırılmış, yenileme projesi kapsamında özgün üsluba ve işleve ne tür bir tasarımsal cevap verildiğine dikkat edilmiştir. Estetik yaratıcılığın da kullanıldığı yeniden kullanım örneklerini inceleyen bu doktora tezi, bu yaratıcılığın tarihi yapının özgün dokusuna ve taşıdığı sosyal hafızaya zararlı olmaya başladığı noktaya özellikle değinmiştir. Ortaya çıkan sonucun hem bütünlüğünü ve dürüstlüğünü koruması, hem de onu kullanacaklar için anlaşılabilir olması arasındaki dengenin korunmasında mimarlık tarihi içinde tutarlı davranmanın önemi ve sonuçları incelenmiştir. Özellikle yeniden işlevlendirme projelerinde kullanılan üslubun özgün yapıdaki üslupla bağlantısını inceleyen bu tez, üslup sorunsalının yapının kendisine ve toplumsal hafızaya etkisini ve İstanbul’da bu konudaki mevcut yaklaşımları ortaya koymaktadır. Bu tez, gerçekçi ve tarihe saygılı olacak her yeniden işlevlendirme projesinin geçmişte var olmuş ve gelecekte gerçekleşecek değişimleri kabullenmiş, aynı zamanda da söz konusu yapının mimari kimliğini değişken çevre bağlamında güncel bir şekilde temsil ve tarif etmenin gerekliliğini anlamış olmasını savunmaktadır.

This thesis analyzes stylistic issues in re-used historic buildings, where designs must respect the historical background of the building while bridging it with the future. Such design interventions, which are active agents in the historical continuity, cannot be considered separately from the building. The analysis of stylistic problematics in terms of architectural history, which forms the main focus of the thesis, is first introduced through the theoretical constructs, historical background as well as the current approaches and problems. Selected re-use projects in Istanbul have been studied in terms of their historical, structural and cultural attributes and what kind of a response the new intervention has given to the existing function and artistic style. This thesis has especially focused on the threshold where aesthetic creativity and deliberate design interventions begin to be harmful to the both the original fabric and social memory. The importance and outcome of being consistent in architectural historical terms has been studied. This thesis studies the interaction between the original artistic style of buildings, and the new designs incorporated when they are subjected to adaptive re-use. All adaptive re-use projects, which aim at respecting the past and having integrity, must acknowledge the changes of the past as well as the future. They must also have understood the necessity of representing and describing the architectural identity of a structure in a contemporary manner, within the context of a continuously changing environment.
