dc.description.abstract Advanced ceramics, when used as an engineering material, possess several properties which can be viewed as superior to metal-based systems. These properties place this new group of ceramics in a most attractive position, not only in the area of performance but also cost effectiveness. These properties include high resistance to abrasion, excellent hot strength, chemical inertness, high machining speeds (as tools) and dimensional stability. Advanced ceramic materials come into prominence in aviation, defense, automotive industries and abrasive application with these properties. Boron carbide (B4C) is one of the most important kinds of advanced ceramic materials. It belongs to the important group of nonmetallic hard materials, which includes alumina, silicon carbide, and diamond. B4C is the third hardest material next to diamond and cubic boron nitride. Combined with its low weight (theoretical density: 2.52 g/cm3), it is the premier material for personal armor. It is used as a nozzle material for slurry pumping and grit blasting because of its excellent abrasion resistance, and for nuclear shielding applications based on boron s high neutron absorption cross section. Ceramic materials have a high melting point because of their strong covalent bonds, so it is difficult to manufacture ceramic materials by casting. These materials are generally formed by sintering process. Sintering is a processing technique used to produce density-controlled materials and components from metal or/and ceramic powders by applying thermal energy. Sintering of pure boron carbide to high densities has historically proven difficult because of strong bonding and low plasticity in its solid form. Thus, hot pressing (HP) and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) have been typically used to achieve near full density. B4C powders are typically hot-pressed at ~2100 ̊C and 30-40 MPa to obtain dense articles. B4C powders were sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method in this study. SPS process makes possible to sinter fully dense B4C-based ceramics in a short time at relatively low sintering temperatures. It has become a very popular technique for ceramic preparation, ever since its emergence in the early 1990s. Its prominent feature is to pass a direct current (DC) through the small graphite die that contains the ceramic powders. Very rapid heating and cooling rates are obtainable, due to the rapid Joule heating, low thermal capacity, and high thermal conductivity of the graphite die. By SPS, various powders can be consolidated at a temperature usually 100-300°C lower than by hot pressing (HP), and in a much shortened time: a typical SPS cycle takes less than 30 min, relative to hours for HP, indicating the high efficiency of SPS. The grain growth can be suppressed by rapid heating and the densification is accelerated at high temperature. Furthermore, the microstructure can be controlled by a fast heating rate and shorter processing times. In the experimental studies, samples were produced by using an SPS apparatus with a capacity of 20.000 A in Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, ITU. A graphitic sheet was placed between the punches and the powder, and between the die and the powder for easy removal and better conductivity. A uniaxial pressure of 40 MPa and a pulsed direct current (12 ms/on, 2 ms/off) were applied during the entire SPS process. Thus, the grain growth can be suppressed by rapid heating and the densification is accelerated at high temperature. Moreover, the microstructure can be controlled by fast heating rate and shorter processing times. The temperature of the die was measured by an optical pyrometer and sintering of composites was conducted under temperature controlled mode by monitoring the shrinkage behavior of the specimens during the SPS process. Linear shrinkage of the specimens during SPS process was continuously monitored by displacement of the punch rods. The current was controlled manually. In this study, monolithic B4C powders and B4C-Carbon nanotube (CNT) composites were prepared using SPS technique. Two different B4C powders which have different particle sizes were used in experiments to investigate the effects of particle size of starting powders. Monolithic B4C samples were sintered in different heating rates (75, 150 and 225 ̊C/min). Other sintering parameters like pressure (20-40 MPa) and sintering time (5 min) were same for all processes. A composite material is made by combining two or more materials – often ones that have very different properties. The two materials work together to give the composite unique properties. B4C-CNT composites containing 1, 2 and 3 mass% CNT were prepared to investigate effect of CNT on densification and mechanical properties of B4C. CNTs and B4C powders were distributed in an ethanol for 60 min. by ultrasonic distributer. After distribution mixture of powders were dried in oven. Dried powders were grinded before the sintering process. B4C-CNT composites were sintered in constant heating rate, pressure and sintering time which are 150 ̊C/min, 20-40 MPa and 5 min, respectively. After sintering process, densification behavior, mechanical properties and microstructural characterization of samples were investigated. The bulk densities of the specimens were determined by the Archimedes’ method and converted to relative density using theoretical densities of B4C and CNT. The relative densities for monolithic B4C samples were ranged between 99.64 and 97.06%. The highest relative density was achieved in 75 ̊C/min heating rate in monolithic B4C samples which are produced by HS grade powders. Increase in heating rate caused to increase of porosity. Density of B4C ceramics’ were decreased by increasing heating rate. In B4C-CNT composites increase in amount of CNT decreased the density of composites. The lowest density was 96.38% in B4C (HP)-3CNT composite. The crystalline phases were identified by X-ray diffractometry in the range of 5-85˚ with Cu Kα radiation. In phase analysis, the characteristic peaks of B4C were identified. But CNT’s peaks were not identified. The low amount of CNT might cause this. The microstructure of fracture surfaces of the sintered specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The grain growth of boron carbide was inhibited significantly by increased heating rate. Porosities were observed in the samples which are sintered at 225 ̊C/min. In composites, fiber structures were observed in composites which were containing 2 and 3 mass % CNT. Vickers hardness (HV) was measured under load of 9.8 N. There was not an important change in hardness of samples which were sintered with different starting powders and heating rates. Vickers micro hardness was between 30.03-30.67 GPa for monolithic B4C samples. Hardness increased in composites. It ranged between 32.23-32.76 GPa. Fracture toughness (K1C) was evaluated by a microhardness tester, under load of 9.8N from the half length of a crack formed around the indentations. The fracture toughness of monolithic B4C were between 4.78-5.20 MPa•m1/2. The highest values were achieved in the samples which were sintered at 225 ̊C/min. In B4C- CNT composites, CNT had a very important effect in fracture toughness. Increase in an amount of CNT provided the increase in fracture toughness. The highest fracture toughness (5.94 MPa•m1/2 ) was achieved by B4C (HP) – 3CNT composites. Bridging of CNTs between crack could be reason for toughening of boron carbide ceramics. en_US
