dc.description.abstract Shells in structural systems are complex structures due to their geometry and also the hardness of their solutions. Method of solutions known as "classic shell theory" are generally developed for thin shells in which the thickness of the shell is negligable with respect to the radius of curvature of the shell. When the thickness of a shell gains importance in comparison with other dimensions as seen in arch dams, pressure wessels and shelter roofs, the effect of the unit deformations and the shear deformations along the thickness becomes important, leads the solutions based on the Kirchoff-Love to be disputable hypothesis. Although some solution techniques which take into consideration the effect of these deformations by expanding them in series are devoloped, they are not convenient for general shape and loading. In this study, a finite element formulation for the thick shells of general shape is obtained by using a twenty noded isoparemetric finite element and the three- dimensional theory of elaticity in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. Strain-Displacement Relations Strain-displacement relations in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are known in 3-D theory of elasticity1161. In this study, all the expressions will be obtained in the orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, since the system stiffness matrix and load vector are formed along the local coordinates. £,, =, Al2.v Au.w r ~ - - H Aj AlAJ AjA3 u 2 S" =- + A12.u A21.v A;A2 AtA2 e"=V-+ A,,.u A,,.w + -İA - +. XI Formulation of the Isopametric Finite Element The 3-D, 20 nodes shell element seen in Fig. 1 will be used. The coordinates of a point in the element can be expressed in terms of the local coordinates and cartesian coordinates of the nodes as, [x y z]=£tf,(£ 77 Q[*yizi\. (2) /=/ U Figure 1 3-D 20 nodes isoparemetric element The shape function, Ni, here can be written in terms of quadratic functions as at corner nodes Ni=0.125(l+Ço) (1 + rp) (1 +Ço) (Ço+ tjo+Ço-2) at nodes of ğ=0 Ni=0.25(l-*s (11) -1-1-1 where, [7]<3x3) is the transformation matrix. Since the shape functions are three dimensional it is possible to obtain an approximate surface element if surface coordinates to which the loads effect are fixed while the node coordinates are brought very closer to the related surface in the moment of Jacobien matrix formation. Besides the nodes reaction components of the nodes other than the nodes of the loaded surface, can be transfered to the related nodes. b) Surface loads in the local coordinate directions The distributed loads, effecting the element surfaces can be given in the direction of local coordinates. If the distributed loads effecting the direction of local coordinates, [Pr]e,are presented in matrix form similar to (9), then the equivalent nodal loads [fr] can be written as, 1 1 1 W=n\MlN\WV\d^c (12) -1-1-1 c) Voluminal loads The nodal forces [>]e equivalent to the voluminal forces caused by the element self weight.can be calculated in the matrix form given below, [/.]'= /' /' /',2 -7,2 J U J V J w r20 *2Q,: Ju Jv J w 1 I I -1-1-1 Tn T!2 Tl3 T2i T22 Tx \J\dfyirjiC, T T T L31 L32 *33 (13) where y is density of the element and g is the acceleration of gravity. d) Concentrated loads in the global coordinate directions Load in the system nodes are assumed to be effecting to a related node of a neighbour node. The transformation is made in the related node of this element. xiv {/.'}- (14) The distributed surface loads effecting the element along global and local coordinates, voluminal distributed loads and the concentrated loads can be transfered to the places in the system load vector. System stiffnes matrix [K] calculated along the element local coordinates and the system load vector {F} form a linear equation system, [K\{D} = {F} (15) From the solution of (15) the node displacement along the local coordinates {£>} can be found. Nodal Stresses The stresses at any point on the element can be calculated by the expressions below. {a}iT={ail G22 CI33 T 12 T23 T3l} {a}iHD]{e}i=[D][B]i{5}° (16) Geometric Properties of Shells in Finite Elements The position vector r of any point on a shell defined in ai, m, ct3 orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, can be written by the use of shape functions. r =(2>,*,>, +(£Nryfa +£>U)e3 (17) The first derivative of the position vector with respect to ğ, rj, Ç can be obtained as follows. r.2 = (2>u.*/)*i +(2XrXH +(2>u-*/)*i '.s = (ZNu-x^ +(£N,j-yfe +{LNu-z^s (18) The Lame' coefficients Aı, A2, A3 which correspond to shell's local coordinates and the derivatives through any / directions can be determined as, 4=^(Z^-^f+(E^-^+(Z^^.)2 (19) xv 4, = -f [E *,,.*,XE jv*,)+ E ^a^)£ jw,)+ E ^.)E *<.*.*<)] (20) To obtain these values by matrix operations the node coordinate matrix [KOOR] is presented as, [KOOR] = x3 y2 _X20 y^O Z2o\20x3) (21) The matrices consisting of the first and second derivatives of shape functions can be formed numericaly as, [EERl\ = N N N iyU -V M3J N N N 1 *12 22 * *3J N N N iylj ly2,3 iy3f N, 20J N, 202 K 20?
