dc.description.abstract Although the Victory of Malazgirt in 1071 opened up the Anatolian doors for the Turks, another three quarters of a century were needed for them to hold on and settle down in Anatolia. Thus the Turks were able to start constructing buildings in the second quarter of the 12* century. For this reason, the 12* century can be regarded as the beginning of the Turkish Mosque Architecture in Anatolia. The 12* century mosques that survived up to today undenvent restoration and modification several times from the time of their construction onwards to the extend that many even lost their original plan. Therefore, the most important problem for this period is to determine the original states of the buildings. We can say that, in general, the 12* century mosques, which comprise of the Anatolian mosques of the first century, were built on three schemes/plans. The first plan, which is found in Qarakhanid and Ghaznavid Mosques, is the type that its harim (prayer hail) consists of horizontal aisles (şahin) and in the middle takes place the mihrab frontal part. The second plan, which is found in the Great Seljuk Mosques, is the type that its harim consists of iwan (eyvan) with a mihrab frontal part and in the north of harim takes place a courtyard. The third plan is the Kufa type mosques. Nevertheless, ali three schemes have been altered when they were transferred to Anatolia. The first change was the dividing wall between harim and the courtyard; in the first type buildings, the mihrab frontal part dominated harim by enlarging gradually and the courtyard was added in front of harim. in the second type, the courtyard and the zvran were inserted to harim and in the middle of the central aisle, an opening symbolised the courtyard with surrounding parts reminding of ivvan. As to the courtyards at the North of harims of the buildings, the buildings with an opening in its harim do not have a courtyard; the buildings wbich usually have harims consisting of horizontal aisles and the Kufa type buildings have a courtyard hı their frontal sides. The façades of the buildings are usually plain walls, excepting portals situated in the Northern sides. The most important architectural element in the façades is the portals. But the portals of the many of the buildings did not survive up to today. The roofîng of the buildings are flat roofs. On the roof, the tops of the mihrab frontal parts are covered with domes ör spires. The supporting elements in the buildings are walls, the pillars and the arches. in the buildings, almost ali of the arches that connect the pillars together are pointed arches. The roofings of the buildings are usually domes hı the mihrab frontal parts and barrel vaults in the aisles. However, in Sivas Ulu Mosque and Konya Ulu Mosque, the harim has a flat wooden ceiling. Although the windows hı the buildings usually have lost their original states, we can say that the rectangular crenel windows were commonly used. XXXIX The most important architectural elements that the buildings contain are the mihrab in the harim and tiıe portals on the façades. The majority of the buildings were built vvithout a minaret; tiıe minarets were added later to the buildings. The original minarets that survived up to today were made of bricks. Ali of the original minbars that the buildings contain were made of timber. As to the materials that were used in the buildings, the use of brick in Qarakhanids and Ghaznavids and the Great Seljuks was replaced by stone hı Anatolia (except îplikçi Mosque and Harput Ulu Mosque). Even then, the brick material was stili in use in the roofing of the buildings. Without a doubt, tiıe building that represents best the transition from brick to stone is Divriği Kale Mosque. The most common decoration found hı the buildings is the stone decoration. in conclusion, it can be observed that the 12* century Anatolian Turkish mosques that were built in the Eastern, Southeastern and Middle Anatolia project the efforts of findüıg some new spaces under the heavy influences of regional styles, ratiıer tiıan having a prevailing unique style. it can also be added that in tiıe 12* century Anatolian Turkish mosques, the harims do not have spatial harmony but signal endeavors toward finding new central spaces and the façades are generally plain walls. Thus, the weaknesses hı the buildings were tried to be compensated with mihrabs [hı the harims] and witiı the portals [at the façades]. en_US
