The use of the finite element method in the designing of the power transformer is very common, especially in no-load and full-load conditions. However, the use of the finite element techniques in the manufacturing of the electrical shunt reactor is still limited. In this study, finite element analysis is used to design the 150 MVAr, air-core oil-filled shunt reactor. Several designs have been made to get the required parameters. This research has mainly focused on the core losses, copper losses, magnetic flux density, and current of the designed shunt reactor. This study is divided into two main sections. In the first section; a finite element analysis was used to make the shunt reactor with the desired output parameters. In the second section, a prototype was developed with the help of the finite element method. The results of the finite element method are compared with the experimental results. Results show that the finite element method is reliable and accurate for designing the reactor.
