Abstract In this study, the damped vibration characteristics of a prototype Li-ion battery pack are investigated. Depending on the damping properties of the epoxy-based polymer adhesive, an attempt is made to obtain a lightweight and robust design complying with the requirements that ensure a shock and vibration resistant structure. To achieve this, a finite element model of the pack is prepared and the material parameters are specified including the damping properties of the epoxy to be employed. As a preliminary work, the damping properties of a commercial epoxy-based polymer adhesive are investigated in terms of thickness and curing parameters. In addition, the determined damping ratios are utilized for characterizing the numerical damped vibration of Li-ion batteries by a predefined prototype model. It is observed that increasing the layer thickness leads to a higher damping effect as expected. On the other hand, a monotonous augmentation of curing agent percentage does not result in a consistent rise or drop in the damping effect.
