İstanbul'da bir endüstriyel miras örneği: bomonti bira fabrikası

Abstract

The Bomonti Brewery that was established by the private enterprise of the Swiss Bomonti Brothers at the beginning of 1890's, during the industrialization period of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century is significant for the development of beer production and the urban development of the Ferikoy Bomonti industrial district. The factory complex located in Istanbul (Sisli Borough, Cumhuriyet Quarter, sheet: 167, block 1018, plot:1) has developed as a result of the annexation of various factory plants built in different periods which reveals the production processes of a significant era. In the introduction section of this article, the industrialization process of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century is mentioned along with the historical development of the brewery production process. Then, the location of the Bomonti brewery, the layout of the production units and the general architectural features of the listed historical buildings located on the plot are introduced with an emphasis on the interventions. In the last section, the historical development of the brewery complex and the listed industrial buildings within are explained according to the written and visual sources obtained as a result of extensive historical research. Lastly, in the evaluation part, the significance of the Bomonti brewery to the industrial heritage of Istanbul is emphasized, and preservation proposals for the buildings are shared. The five listed historical buildings within the Bomonti Brewery formed the core of the factory complex built between the years 1893 and 1924, where the production activities were mainly concentrated. Traces of the historical layers belonging to the annex period of the 1940's are clearly visible. These buildings have to be preserved as industrial heritage assets unquestioningly, due to their high architectural and artistic values, along with their documentation aspects. In consequence, the preservation of these plants with a significant emphasis on the structural and architectural originalities derived from the spatial arrangements documenting the production process, the remaining facilities and the traces revealing the historical development is vital for proposing a proper function for the brewery.
