Recent developments in computer technology are constantly increasing the share of the numerical models during the design of mechanical systems. The aim of this thesis is to improve the accuracy of the numerical models for structures by modifying these models using experimental data. This process is called “Model Updating”. In this thesis, the properties expected from both numerical and experimental models for modal updating purposes are summarized. A detailed literature survey on model updating is conducted. Then, a sensitivity-based model updating approach is selected for further research and applications. In cases where number of updating parameters is greater than number of available equations, ‘Effective Independence Distribution’ is used to determine the best parameters for solving the current equations. The assessment of the performance of the model updating routine is done in two steps. In the so-called ‘Numerical Applications’ step, the errors in the numerical models are already known at the beginning and the aim is to assess the performance of the technique to identify these known errors. In the second step, the method is applied for real structures where the errors are unknowns to be determined and corrected. Results of numerical and experimental applications indicate information about singularity of solution, physical meaning of results and accuracy of the numerical model. Results of applications are combined to evaluate applicability of modal updating for practical cases.
