Abstract
This study is aimed to develop a numerical model to predict the ballistic impact performance of the laminated composite materials. The numerical model is created in ABAQUS taken into consideration both individual damageable plies and damage at the interface between the plies. The in built Hashin damage model in ABAQUS is used to model damage behavior of the plies and the cohesive elements are used at between the composite plies to describe the interlaminar damage mode, predominantly delamination. Different damage and energy absorbing mechanisms, such as cone formation on back face of the target, tensile failure of primary yarns, delamination, matrix cracking and shear plugging, are identified. In order to validate the developed numerical model, force versus displacement curves and observed energy are compared with experimental results in order to validate the developed computational model.
