AbstractA measurement is presented of electroweak (EW) production of a $$\mathrm{W} $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>W</mml:mi></mml:math> boson in association with two jets in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msqrt><mml:mi>s</mml:mi></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>13</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Te</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math>. The data sample was recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mspace/><mml:msup><mml:mtext>fb</mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>. The measurement is performed for the $$\ell \nu $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi><mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math>jj final state (with $$\ell \nu $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>ℓ</mml:mi><mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math> indicating a lepton–neutrino pair, and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in a kinematic region defined by invariant mass $$m_\mathrm {jj} &gt;120\,\text {Ge}\text {V} $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mi>jj</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>&gt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>120</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Ge</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> and transverse momenta $$p_\mathrm {T j} &gt; 25\,\text {Ge}\text {V} $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi><mml:mi>j</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>&gt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>25</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Ge</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math>. The cross section of the process is measured in the electron and muon channels yielding $$\sigma _\mathrm {EW}(\mathrm{W} \mathrm {jj})= 6.23 \pm 0.12 \,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.61 \,\text {(syst)} \,\text {pb} $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>σ</mml:mi><mml:mi>EW</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>jj</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>6.23</mml:mn><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>0.12</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:mtext>(stat)</mml:mtext><mml:mo>±</mml:mo><mml:mn>0.61</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:mtext>(syst)</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/><mml:mtext>pb</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:math> per channel, in agreement with leading-order standard model predictions. The additional hadronic activity of events in a signal-enriched region is studied, and the measurements are compared with predictions. The final state is also used to perform a search for anomalous trilinear gauge couplings. Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95% confidence level intervals are $$-2.3&lt; c_{{\mathrm{W} \mathrm{W} \mathrm{W}}}/\varLambda ^2 &lt; 2.5\,\text {Te}\text {V} ^{-2}$$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>2.3</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>2.5</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Te</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>, $$-8.8&lt; c_{\mathrm{W}}/\varLambda ^2 &lt; 16\,\text {Te}\text {V} ^{-2}$$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>8.8</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>16</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Te</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>, and $$-45&lt; c_{\mathrm{B}}/\varLambda ^2 &lt; 46\,\text {Te}\text {V} ^{-2}$$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>45</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mi>B</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>46</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Te</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>. These results are combined with the CMS EW $$\mathrm{Zjj} $$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>Zjj</mml:mi></mml:math> analysis, yielding the constraint on the $$c_{{\mathrm{W} \mathrm{W} \mathrm{W}}}$$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:math> coupling: $$-1.8&lt; c_{{\mathrm{W} \mathrm{W} \mathrm{W}}}/\varLambda ^2 &lt; 2.0\,\text {Te}\text {V} ^{-2}$$<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>1.8</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mi>W</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>Λ</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>2.0</mml:mn><mml:mspace/><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>Te</mml:mtext><mml:mspace/></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>.
