In this thesis, the use of industrial minerals like TiO2, calcined kaolen, calcite, talc and Na-Montmorillonite in paint formulations was optimized through studying the interactions among these materials and NaPAA (sodium polyacrylate), generally used as a dispersant in paint formulations. Adsorption, electrokinetic, rheology and stability of suspensions were systematically investigated to identify the regions of stability in these systems. An optimum paint recipe involving different types and amount of these minerals was formulated. In addition to the standard paint analysis, dry paint film surfaces were characterized using “Atomic Force Microscope” (AFM) and agglomeration or dispersion of minerals on the surface were determined by topographic images of the paints. These surface structures were correlated with the standard paint analysis such as opacity and gloss. In addition, surface energy components and Hamaker constants for TiO2 and calcite were calculated with the help of contact angles measurements. Interaction between titanium dioxide and calcite using the above data together with zeta potential measurements was used to generate force-distance curves with the aim of mimicking the stability of paint suspensions.
