Özet
The investigation area, which lies in northwest Anatolia between the Black Sea coastline (Şile-Kaynarca) and Bursa, is paleo-tectonically important due to including the İstanbul and Sakarya zones which are two important tectonic units of Pontides and the Intra-Pontide suture between these two zones. The Upper Cretaceous-Eocene units are widespread between the Black Sea coastline (Şile-Kaynarca) and Bursa in Northwest Anatolia. While investigating the stratigraphic evolution of these units to bring to light the Late Cretaceous-Eocene paleogeography and to obtain information about the evolution of the Intra-Pontide suture, the investigation area was separated into three regions, namely the Kocaeli Peninsula, the Armutlu Peninsula and the İznik Lake-Bursa stretch. In order to establish the stratigraphy of the investigation area correctly and in detail in the light of paleontologic data, stratigraphic sections have been measured in each of the three regions. The Upper Cretaceous-Eocene units, which overlaid different basements in each of the three regions, exhibit lateral correlated sequences between Şile-Kaynarca and Bursa, in spite of facies differences. This observation indicates that the İstanbul, Armutlu and Sakarya zones were joined before the Campanian and the Intra-Pontide suture was closed before the Campanian.
