dc.description.abstract In this study, numerical calculations are done by using a commercial computer program, Fluent 6.0, to investigate highly underexpanded sonic jets. The objective is to study certain characteristics of the jet flow such as the jet evolution, centerline velocity decay and jet growth rate. Although the fundamental structure of incompressible turbulent free jets are well understood, underexpanded jets present complex flow features such as expansion and shock waves, and are not fully understood. With some assumptions such as ideal gas, adiabatic flow etc. some expressions are found to generalize the underexpanded jet flow. By employing proper scaling parameters to be used to normalize the flow properties, generalization of different cases is possible. Such an attempt has been made by Yüceil and Ötügen in an experimental study using an underexpanded sonic jet for various underexpansion ratios. In the present study, results for the near field and the far field of the jet were compared with experimental data for the sonic jet with underexpansion ratios of 7.5, 15.5 and 20.3. Far field results for underexpansion ratios of 15.5 and 20.3 were obtained and by using the scaling parameters taken from studies of Yuceil and Otugen, results were scaled and compared with the experimental data. The effects of turbulent mixing in the near field are also observed. Results show that the numerical prediction of the flow field of underexpanded jets could not only be an alternative to the extensive experimental work required for these flows but also reduce the amount of work to investigate and study different cases. en_US
