In this study, the local geoid solutions to use for an accurate transformation of GPS-derived ellipsoidal heights to orthometric heights in local vertical datum were investigated. The investigation consists of two steps. In the first step, the national Turkey geoids TG99A and TG03 and European gravimetric geoid EGG97 were validated using GPS/levelling data of five local networks. These models were fitted to the national vertical datum at GPS/levelling benchmarks using surface fitting models. The optimal surface model was determined in each local area according to applied tests. Also local GPS/levelling geoids were determined and tested at independent GPS/levelling benchmarks. All the results from the applied geoid solutions were compared and the most appropriate solution for transformation of the GPS-derived heights in local test area was determined. In the second step, the contributions of new data from gravity field satellite missions CHAMP and GRACE and the high resolution digital terrain data from SRTM to the accuracy improvement of a high-resolution regional gravimetric model of Turkey were tested. With this aim, the global potential models were validated using terrestrial gravity and GPS/levelling data in local test areas as well as over the whole Turkey. The gravimetric geoid models were determined using the mentioned global potential models and SRTM data via remove-restore approach and their accuracies were compared with TG03 model. The results of this research are expected to contribute to going-on studies for improvement of the geodetic infrastructure of Turkey.
