In this study, heat transfer in a laminar oscillating vertical annular liquid column having an interface with the atmosphere investigated experimentally and theoretically. Experimental study proved that frequency and displacement amplitude were two important parameters affecting heat transfer from a uniform heat flux surface to reciprocating flow. A new approach was taken in the calculation of Nusselt number. A correlation equation was obtained for the Nusselt number versus kinetic Reynolds number. A mathematical model has been developed using the control volume method based on the experimental setup and reciprocating flow. The proposed mathematical formulation considers continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations to obtain governing equations. The governing equations were solved by Runge-Kutta method and compared with experimental data. Heat transfer in the moving liquid column was also investigated numerically using the Fluent CFD code. Velocity and temperature profiles obtained numerically over a cycle were examined to gain insight into heat transfer process of the considered problem. They proved that the phase lag between boundary layer and core flow increases heat transfer drastically compared to steady continuous flow. Numerically calculated cycle averaged Nusselt numbers were compared with experimentally determined Nusselt numbers. The agreement between the two is reasonably good.
