Tüm OSA setlerinde %45’in üzerinde çamur azalması görülmüştür.
The activated sludge which is flexible, reliable process capable of removing soluble organic matter, stabilizing insoluble organic matter, and achieving a high degree of nitrification, is a widely used process for the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters. The production of waste sludge to control the solids retention time in the activated sludge systems is inevitable. Active sludge process is usefullness in wastewater treatment, however this process produces excess sludge as a byproduct that needs to be disposed. Combination of dewatering, thickening, digestion, and chemical treatment is generally used to treat excess sludge. Otherwise treatment and disposal of excess sludge from wastewater treatment plants account for up to %60 of the total plant operation cost. Considering the municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants, sludge treatment and disposal are often the most important cost factors. Besides, using the most recent technologies, organic matter content of the treatment sludges cannot be reduced to the level to meet new regulatory requirements in the existing legislation related to sludge treatment and disposal. Consequently, the high cost of sludge treatment and disposal, and the characteristics of treated sludge to be disposed are still vital problems waiting for a practical solution. These problems were brought researchers and engineers to use potential sludge reduction strategies for activated sludge systems. Several strategies and technologies have been proposed to reduce excess sludge generation in biological wastewater treatment processes such as ozonation, addition of uncoupling chemical, and a thermophilic aerobic digestion. Several approaches which were applied to minimise excess sludge need chemical addition such as surfactant, ozone, enzyme, uncouplers or weren t cost effective. Many chemicals long-term bioacclimation may be xenobiotic and potentially harmful to the environment. OSA process that is cost effective by comparison with another sludge minimization process and don t need any chemical addition and xenobiotic and potentially harmful to the environment. An innovative process, called the OSA (Oxic/Settling/Snaerobic) Process, focusing on the further volatile solids (VS) destruction has been developed to reduce excess sludge generation. OSA process is called an activated sludge system that incorporates a sidestream anaerobic bioreactor. There are several variations of the OSA Process, including the use of a low dissolved re-aeration unit that is coupled with the anaerobic bioreactor prior to return of the sludge to the aeration basin. The basic configuration for this process utilizes an anaerobic unit through which recycled sludge passes prior to being returned to the aeration basin. This process has been shown in field operations to reduce solids by approximately 60 to 70%. The focus of this study was to obtain information about the effectiveness of minimization of excess sludge with nitrogen removal. This study was designed to investigate the performance of the OSA process, optimize excess sludge reduction xviii and nitrogen removal in the activated sludge process. For those objectives, laboratory scale activated sludge systems incorporating an anaerobic bioreactor into the sludge recycle stream were operated. Each system was consisted of an sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and a sidestream anaerobic bioreactor and kept at room temperature (22±1 ˚C). The operation cycle of each SBR consisted of 5 hours of reaction (aeration or mixing provided) phase and 45 min of settling phase, 15 min of decanting and idle phase. The sludge was not wasted intentionally from the SBRs except reference reactor during the entire study. The only losses of sludge from the SBRs were daily sludge interchange between SBR and anaerobic bioreactor and a low amount of sludge escaped from the systems. The interchange rate was chosen as 10%. It was maintained by returning 1/10th of settled sludge from SBRs in both systems. Thus, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and sludge age were maintained at 10 days in the anaerobic bioreactors. The systems were fed with the same synthetic wastewater containing 450 mg/l of COD. The synthetic wastewater was composed of peptone and meat extract as carbon sources. Feed solution was prepared daily using tap water by completely mixing of carbon sources with macro- and micronutrients. The synthetic wastewater was fed from a single feeding tank which is then distributed to other reactors. Each reactor was fed 500 ml per cycle. The synthetic wastewater was continuously stirred to obtain homogeneity. The experimental study was consisted parallel operation of two OSA systems operated in the same manner except their feeding patterns and duration of mixing periods. The seed sludge from Paşaköy Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, Istanbul was used in order to start up the systems. For the optimization of nitrogen removal 5 runs were designed to investigate the effect of feeding pattern (as one and double feeding) and duration of anoxic phase. The SBR was operated at 4 cycles per day which is controlled by timers. First three runs were included one feeding at the beginning of reaction phase. Feeding volume of synthetic waste water is 500 ml for the first three runs for each cycle. Last three runs One of these operation was containing a control (reference) run with sludge wastage from the reactors. Last three sets included two feeding phases and 250 ml synthetic wastewater was transferred to each reactor in feeding phase. Each cycle included six steps which takes 6 hours for each except control run. These phases are feeding, reacting, settling, decanting, exchanging and idling. Furthermore, exchanging phase occurs only one cycle in a day. There were two steps: aeration and mixing which takes 5 hours. Control run was not including an interchange phase. Reaction phase consisted of aeration and mixing that takes 5 hours. After reaction phase, settling process took 45 minutes and then in the decant phase, treated wastewater was discharged from the SBR tank in 4 minutes. Decanting phase took 4 minutes. In exchanging phase after settling and decanting in the SBR tank, 100 ml of the activated sludge in SBR tank, was transferred to bioreactor. At the same time 100 ml of the actived sludge in continuous stirred bioreactor transfered to SBR. After idling phase which takes 11 minutes, shock feding is made to the SBR tank again and a new cycle begins. In this experimental work, given the process conditions above, there are totally 4 cycles in each run. This cycle is thought to represent the other cycles as well. Sludge disposal in the control system and sludge interchange (Run-1 to Run -5) between xix anaerobic reactor and SBR in OSA Systems, occured during this cycle. First sample is taken from the end of 3. cycle’s decanting phase. And then, experiments are performed with sample taken from the end of aeration, mixing and decanting phases during 4.Cycle. According to Run’s operation scheme, phase number and time change in cycles, so number of sample and sampling time were varied from run to run. Syntetic wastewater analysis are performed weekly due to weekly preparation of stock solution. Because of anaerobic operation conditions of bioreactor it is given a lot of importance to keep close even monitoring suspended solids concentration and it is taken samples from feeding line of SBR tank for analysing SS, VSS, TS and VTS at least 1 time in a week. Also COD, Ammonia and Anion analysis are performed occasionally for these samples. Daily experiments are in progress for detecting the time of equilibrium. Each run, system parameters (SS, VSS, ions and KOİ, TKN) were monitored daily experiments after steady state was reached. When the system reach to steady state, in other words when the daily experiment results are consistent to each other, taking first sample from end of third cycle’s output water, the system is scrutinised with half-hourly sample. After detailed analysis, the operation of the system was changed. Total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS), total volatile solids (VS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), and soluble COD, (TKN) total kjeldahl nitrogen were measured according to Standard Methods (APHA, 2005). Ion chromatography (Dionex ICS-1500) is used for anion (orthophosphate, chloride, sulfate, fluoride, nitrate and nitrite) analysis. The experimental results showed that sludge reduction has been demonstrated by incorporating a sidestream anaerobic bioreactor with a 10 day the hydraulic retention time (HRT) as compared to Control systems without performans problem. The results indicate that feeding pattern and the rate of duration of mixing period (Tanox) to total reaction time (Tc) plays an important role on nutrient removal in the OSA systems without any affect on sludge reduction. It is proved that nitrogen removal is possible besides sludge minimization. The sludge reduction values above 45% was achieved during the all runs. An increase in the number of feeding (from one at the beginning of reaction phate to two: one at the beginning and in the middle of reaction phase) did not affect sludge reduction but improved nitrogen removal. Eventually, feeding patter with two equal feeding of wastewater is proposed to be most efficient way in order to increase nitrogen removal. The most appropriate ratio of Tanox/TC was determined as 0,6. The operation condition in OSA configuration with two-shared feeding (at the beginning and in the middle of reaction phase) and the ratio of Tanox/TC = 0,6 is proposed to be the most efficient for both nitrogen removal and sludge reduction.
