In this thesis, the ground resonance instability of a helicopter is analyzed and designed to eliminate its occurance. Ground resonance is a dynamical instability which appears as a result of the coalescence of lead-lag mode of the rotor with the pitch and roll mode of the fuselage when the helicopter stands on its own landing gear on the ground. Basically, the ground resonance phenomena is analyzed by setting up three and four degrees of freedom mathematical models. Firstly, the equations of motion of the systems are obtained by utilizing the Lagrange equations and then these equations are linearized. In this stage, the equations of motion have periodic coefficients even though they are linear. By using Fourier coordinate transformation, periodic coeffients are eliminated from equations of motion. This leads to constant coefficient which permits the use of standard eigenvalue analysis. Having done the eigenvalue analysis, Coleman –also known as Campbell– diagram is obtained. Inspection of such diagrams reveals the rotor speed ranges where the ground resonance may occur. The approach for the elimination of ground resonance instability is based on providing sufficient level of damping to the system. In other words, the product of the damping levels associated with the fuselage mode and the lead-lag mode of the rotor should be greater than a critical value in order to avoid ground resonance problem. This criterion is applied for İTÜ-LCH and the required damping levels are identified.
